Problem has also got to do a lot with the Indian psychology. Of course corruption remains the root cause of it all. Indian's would rather steal or even kill as long as they can get away with it. So, they resist wearing helmets, putting on the seat belts, cut lanes indiscrimately... you name it, as long as they are not caught by the law. No matter how much you talk of risk to their lives, threat to others they won't give a hoot about it. And this is a fact. I have seen people banging into a stationary car when trying to jump signal and then after heated arguments even bring out the car jack to attack the suffering party... all to get away from it all. No one will ever acknowledge that they caused a mishap. Sad but that is how it stands.

Of course, the root is corruption. If people knew that it brings swift rebuttal from law they will think twice. Make traffic offenses punishable. Suspend the licenses, attach the offending vehicles even make serious offenses punishable by jail. But then does the law care? Or rather the keepers of the law care? No, for them the more such things happen the better it is. They would rather catch hold of a guy and try to milk him for all his worth.

Till situation actually changes (law and enforcement becomes stringent) all we can do is to be on the defensive ourselves. Try to judge for not only your but others reaction times, intentions etc... And I am not being pessimist but rather circumspect and a hard-eyed realist.
