Folks, get ready for another couple of years of horrible road conditions.

If the report is believed to be true, the maintenance of 12 Flyovers across the city, including most of the flyovers on ORR have been handed over from BDA to BBMP.

Apparantly BBMP is cash-strapped and its regular maintenance work are all stranded.
While regular asphalting or roads and fixing potholes are done almost once in 5 years, I wonder what will happen to these flyovers and underpasses ? Will the maintenance be done only when it starts crumbling down ?

Even the few sections of the city's infrastructure that have been reasonably well-maintained, have now been pushed into a pothole. Or that is what experts say, over the decision to hand over 12 flyovers and the Outer Ring Road, constructed and maintained by the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), to the cash-strapped and almost moribund Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

The road tax is the highest here in the country. The revenue that they get from road tax should be more than adequate to attend to the road maintenance apart from filling their personal coffers.

The condition of the ORR underpass and the flyover went to the worst condition. Lots of traffic jam used to happen during office hours due to the broken road. As an election Bonanza they have fixed to a certain level. Now if they handover to the BBMP then, in another few months again we will reach in the same condition.

The underpasses are now going to double up as culverts during rainy season and off-road dust tracks during summer.

In the place where I live, the roads are in shambles for more than a year. Just before elections, the BBMP folks came and made a big scene there as if they are planning to repair the whole area. Nobody is seen there after elections and the roads are now worse off with all the digging up work done for storm water drains. Many road side apartments are completely cut-off from the road and the residents are forced to park on the road. Our area is on the border of Mahadevpura and Bommanahalli Assembly and Blore Central and South Parliament constituencies. So no candidate ever bothers to come to our side either.

Its true that BBMP is cash strapped. However, BDA itself works on grants received from the govt and doesnt earn a fraction of BBMP for itself. So no sure what the issue is.
Maintenance problem has nothing to do with handing over flyovers to BDA. BDA doesn't maintain any after construction and mandatory maintenance period by the contractor.

I believe as part of this transfer, BDA will asphalt all the roads and flyovers under its preview and then hand it over to BBMP. Hopefully, the work they do will last for another 5 years.
