Re: Mumbai: Fill in the Potholes Project

Last month I had read an article about some spoof photographs by a few friends to protest against the pothole problem in Lithuania (check it out)

The conditions of our roads have gone from bad to worse. Even a well built car will begin to rattle if not driven with care on Mumbai's streets. However, after all these years, people have just grown used to it and have learnt to ignore these things and move on with their busy lives.

What i liked about fill in the potholes project is that these guys are thinking of a solution to develop an app to report and track potholes.

And crowd funding the app to develop it.

Develop an app or portal for road users to report potholes: Parliamentary panel

Quote:
NEW DELHI: A parliamentary panel has suggested road transport and highways ministry to develop a smartphone application or website to enable highway users to report potholes and to put a mechanism in place to ensure timely action to fix them.
  • About six people died on Indian roads due to pothole-related accidents in 2018. The report for 2019 is not yet published.
  • The standing committee on road transport and highways ministry has also raised concern over the poor quality and pliability of several stretches. It has recommended deploying latest technology to monitor the quality and riding conditions of roads.
  • "The committee further recommends that there should be strict accountability about the condition of the roads which may be shared by the authority in-charge for ensuring the quality of the road as well as the concessionaire carrying out the road project," the report submitted in the Parliament said.
  • It has also recommended adequate fund allocation for periodic quality checks over different stretches of a road under construction or maintenance, during various phases of the project, and also after its completion.
  • "The committee further recommends that the ministry should chalk out a road quality score mechanism which can be updated throughout the various stages of progress of a road project. This score should be based on the quality of construction material, compliance with safety standards and user feedback. This score would also help in assessing the amount of funds needed to carry out repair works on the road – with roads needing less maintenance getting higher scores," the report said.
  • It added that the scoring of road projects should be linked to road contractors' portfolio and priority in awarding a road project be given to those contractors with a history of constructing quality road projects.
Quite an interesting suggestion, attaching road-quality-score to the contractor's portfolio and giving priorities to high-scored contractors while awarding future projects is a brilliant idea if executed properly.

Re: Mumbai: Fill in the Potholes Project

JCB's website has a Pothole Pro machine that helps in pothole repairs:

https://www.jcb.com/potholepro

Some details here.

Unfortunately is available only in the UK for now. Fingers crossed, we in India can relish pothole-free roads soon!
