Road outside your building is no longer 'free parking space'

Source & Full Article

Quote:
The BMC on Friday cleared its new parking policy, effectively ending the practice of people using roads outside their buildings as parking lots, and hiking by nearly 300 per cent the byhour parking rates in designated bays in certain localities.

The proposed residential parking rate for the island city -- Colaba to Mahim - has been set at a steep Rs 1,800 a month per car. The corresponding rates for western and eastern suburbs are Rs 1200 and Rs 600 per month per car.

Since parking on roads was free so far, even though it often led to fights among residents, opposition leaders believe the new steep charge will prove to be unpopular with car owners. They also questioned who will make sure that once a car owner buys a parking space, it remains available to him at all times and will not be allowed to be encroached upon.

Re: Road outside your building is no longer 'free parking space'

Typical hair-brained idea that'll never see the light of day. The hefty road tax we pay already includes the use of public roads, including for parking.

Then, keeping in mind how disorganised & corrupt our official machinery is, fat chance of ever implementing this properly. The BMC won't have a clue of how to go about it.

What they can do instead is give a discount on the road tax to those who can prove a dedicated private parking spot for their cars??
