F50, did they verify that you are the owner? What if a thief is driving the car in the first place :D.

Guruji, I think these would be rare cases. In such case the owner will probably require to change the glasses (if the etching is mandatory) or be without etching. If I remember correctly, in Assam, the etching is mandatory. Don't know about other states.

Why change the glasses? Even if you get your glasses changed for some so-so quality ones at Kurla it will still cost you 3600 for the set of 4.
I would rather get my original number cross off and new number etched right next to it.

Now, even the A.S,S have started doing this & recommend it every time you go there. Makes a small difference only when the cop actually checks in the glass

Yeah and they are charging 5 times more than RTO. When I gave my car for the 1st service last week, he said they'll charge me 250 bucks for it. I was :Shockked: still asked them to go ahead and do it. But some computer was not working etc etc and it was not done.

When I need the RTO etchers, they no where to be seen!!

Good question, GTO. I guess a thief would be the first guy to line for with the cops for etching. lol:

Hi,

Recently a friend informed me that it is mandatory to have your car's registration number etched on the top corner of all the windows including the front and rear windscreen.

Even if its not compulsory I guess its a good preventive step against car thefts. I am based out of Mumbai, and have recently bought a Skoda Fabia. JMD Auto Andheri East (Mumbai) informed me that they will charge me Rs 1500/- for getting this done. Is this a fair price?

Alternatively is there anyplace else I can get this done around Bandra, Andheri East or Chembur in Mumbai?

Regards,

Kunaal

Is it forced by rule anywhere in India? First time I am hearing about this.

I think its an old proposal and not a rule. Has been there for quite some time now. I got my windows etched some 6 years ago for some 500 bucks; 1500 is expensive.

With no offense to any Skoda Fabia owners, the chance of a fabia getting stolen are quite bleak as it is a slow seller. The only thing which may get stolen is the badge/monogram.

In my opinion, save those 1500 bucks for some fuel and a long drive with your loved ones.

It is a good idea to get the registration no etched on the car glasses.

Recently read about a Toyota dealer charging only Rs. 500 for this on a Fortuner or a Innova on this forum.

Rs. 1500 is high.

Not Sure whether its Rule or not but its a good deterrent for Thieves,
I paid around 350Rs for it to be done on WagonR at spectra ghatkopar. This was 2 yrs back.

Check at some other garage's or MASS, these jobs are done by some outside guys not the regular employees.

Rs 1500 is outrageous. Typical Skoda pricing I guess. I had paid around Rs 250 few years ago for number etching on my Swift. Should cost the same irrespective of the car make.

I am curious to see how it looks like ! Anyone got an image?

Its a small etching on the extreme corners of the glass. The only time one would probably notice is when you would see your car's number as a small shadow on the seat or somewhere. Hardly noticible.

I remember that it was the norm earlier and we had it on our Omni. No longer have it on any of our cars.

Glass can be changed. What then?

Nothing is foolproof. The idea is to make it as hard as possible and increase the probability of making a mistake.
