Re: Sleeping / power-napping in a car as a passenger - Your view?

Whether or not passengers sleep doesnt matter to me. Also, I do not mind falling asleep if others are driving.

I answered 'rarely'. I rarely sit in passenger seat as I am the one who drives most of the time.

As a consultant who took 8 flights (3 redeye) in the last working week (5 planned this week!), this is an occupational hazard.

I sleep in ubers all the time.

Where possible, I sleep in the front seat if it has an airbag (etios) or in the seat behind the driver (skin in the game) if that seat has a seat belt.

Have faith in skin in the game.

Re: Sleeping / power-napping in a car as a passenger - Your view?

If I sit in front passenger seat, I will not sleep 90% of the time. I'll act as a navigator, DJ and snack/water supplier to the driver. I will sleep in rear seat if I know the driver very well. Always I will buckle up in rear seat as well here in US. But in India, most of people will put seat cover and don't leave the buckle open to fasten the seat belt in rear . In recent times, I slept only once when sitting in front seat because me and my friend where embarked on 1200 mile journey overnight. I trust his driving skill so I slept when he was driving and vice versa.

As a working person catching very early morning flights and coming back late, one tends to lose a lot of one’s natural sleep rhythms. Hence, whenever there is a chance of some shut-eye, I grab at it.
Cabs, planes, trains, and indeed any mode of transport.

I never sleep. Not that I dont trust the driver (maybe because I think I am better ). I usually drive all the time when going out with friends for long distances, overnight etc. I am so used to it that if I close my eyes in passenger seat, I get up scared that I am sleeping while driving.
It also helps to talk to the driver and keep them alert.

Re: Sleeping / power-napping in a car as a passenger - Your view?

Rarely sleep while traveling in a car, I am bit paranoid when not at drivers seat. However, I don't put across driving suggestions or commentary which may annoy a driver.

While I am driving, I prefer all my passengers asleep unless I have handed over navigation work to someone.

Voted for "rarely".
Not that I am paranoid but I generally like to stay active - while driving () or even while sitting in the passenger seat(admiring outside scenery )

Re: Sleeping / power-napping in a car as a passenger - Your view?

It is very difficult to sleep when someone else is driving because of fear of another driver. I hardly trust anyone else behind the wheel.
Also, enjoying the view outside is one of my favourite things about a road trip.

Re: Sleeping / power-napping in a car as a passenger - Your view?

On my car for myself: Never. I am the driver. When I feel sleepy, I park and take a power nap. Happened a few times on my 1000 plus km runs. The maximum I have spent in the passenger seat is about 40 km in about 62000 kms clocked in the last 2 cars.

On my car for others: Doesn't bother me as long as I am not borderline myself, in which case I wake my wife up to keep talking. Rest of the time I drive to put the rest of my passengers to sleep, especially my 5 year old.

On a short hop taxi - Never.

On a long haul taxi - Don't really try to stay awake. Might have taken a few winks.

Voted "Sometimes"
I tend to doze off when the stretches are long and boring (read straight 100+ km highways). However, I slip to the backseat at that time.

Re: Sleeping / power-napping in a car as a passenger - Your view?

I hardly had any experience as a passenger in car (except when i hire a cab). But whenever i was a passenger in my own car and my friend was driving, i had a power nap only once. All other times when i was a passenger i never slept since the company was very good and the conversations kept me awake.

Re: Sleeping / power-napping in a car as a passenger - Your view?

I have rarely traveled in a car as a passenger. In the rare times i did i find it very unnerving to nap since i am not fully confident of the drivers abilities. Even as a passenger my attention is on the road asking the driver to slow, look for other vehicles, look in the rear view etc. Basically i am virtually driving the car though i am a passenger. I wish i am driven in somebody's car whose driving abilities i am fully confident of.

In this particular case, I will freely admit to being a hypocrite.

The rule for me is "no sleeping", and there are no exceptions to this rule.
But, when I am driving, I would much prefer for the passengers to be fast asleep.

Re: Sleeping / power-napping in a car as a passenger - Your view?

Power napping in a car. Yes I do. However it depends on the situation I am in. If I have worked the whole day and am returning in a car with a driver I generally doze off after 10 mins if the driver is driving relatively smoothly.

Early morning dozing also happens when conditions are suitable. Cool fresh air, no interesting company in the car, smooth road and relaxed smooth driving without sudden jerks and braking.

Its easier to fall asleep on the highway than city roads. Power napping recharges like nothing else on the road.

Re: Toyota says it is too early to focus only on EVs

Daub a lot of odomos, lower the windows by half an inch and you can sleep just as well as you did anywhere. I used to hold a cobra magnum pepper spray in my hand, just a habit.
