Re: Atal Tunnel - World's longest highway tunnel above 10,000 ft. is now ready

3 Days, 3 Accidents: Motorists Race In The Newly Inaugurated Atal Tunnel.

Quote:
Just 72 hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the world's longest highway tunnel—Atal Rohtang Tunnel in Himachal, three accidents were reported with the motorists driving recklessly.

While some did not adhere to the speed limit of 80km/hr, some stopped midway to click selfies.

Three vehicles collided after one of the over-speeding vehicles attempted to overtake another vehicle, violating the 'no overtaking' rule. The accident was recorded by the CCTV cameras installed inside the tunnel.

No casualties or serious injuries have been reported so far. The authorities had to, however, halt the traffic for some time.

I was just wondering how soon before this happens. That too with the reduced traffic. Once Ladakh tourism opens up, wonder how many morons with rented cars will end up crashing. Really enjoyed the view while crossing the Rotang Pass last time. And by the looks of it, it will be safer too.

Absolutely. This is the irresponsbile tourist or citizen of the country, who will be seen everywhere.
I can guess now, that the local bodies will start a permit system, like how they have it for Rohtang pass, for those going to Leh.

The tunnel is under CCTV survellience. Use it.
How exactly will a permit system tackle this problem?

The permit system will not solve any problem for sure, but will be an additional harrasment for tourists and travelers towards Atal tunnel and further.

For now, this tunnel is a novelty with lot of publicity so the selfie clickers will cause problems. Add to it the thrill of speeding inside a tunnel and some bikers will not resist.

With all the technology in there, it should be fairly easy to monitor, impose and enforce strict penalties on rule breakers.

I am wondering if the evacuation tunnel can be modified for enabling 2-wheelers to cross through.

They should enforce severe penalty for violations like crossing speed limit, overtaking etc. With plenty of cameras around, it's supposed to be very easy. Nothing than a hefty penalty can stop this menace. Fines should be displayed clearly at both the entrances.

Re: Atal Tunnel - World's longest highway tunnel above 10,000 ft. is now ready

We Indians must be the biggest dumbass drivers in the world. We complain about bad roads, fall into potholes and break our heads without helmets.

Out we go on an expressway or a newly built tunnel on which there are zero complaints to be made and still crash because of overspeeding, losing control, selfie stunts, overtaking gone wrong etc.

So where can Indians actually ride/drive safely?

I am sure with CCTV they can have loudspeakers through which they can yell at people who stop for selfies ! Not sure why they need selfies inside a tunnel

Does BRO have great engineering capability compared to other private firms in the country ? I can assume they are very good having constructed roads/bridges on rough terrains. Just wanted to understand. Do they get preference or tenders are not usually issued at all ?

Have been very regular user of the Eisenhower tunnel in the Rocky mountains. That has fire stations and huge building infrastructure within between the bi-directional tunnels.

Kullu DM issues traffic regulations for Atal Tunnel.

Complete ban on unnecessary movement in emergency exits tunnel, violation to attract action under Sec 144 CrPC. Complete ban on photography and videography from 200 metres before south portal up to end of tunnel.

Outside India for sure and especially in countries where prohibitive fines and very strict monitoring is implemented.

The Chinese are NOT happy about Atal Tunnel's inauguration

Atal Tunnel to have limited benefit to India in wartime
https://www.globaltimes.cn/content/1202702.shtml

Quote:
The tunnel will be of great help to Indian troops and their provision of supplies in peacetime; however, it has no benefit in wartime, especially if military conflict breaks out. The Chinese People's Liberation Army has means to make this tunnel unserviceable
They are even questioning the claim that it is the longest tunnel above 10,000 ft

Atal Tunnel claims puncture India's inflated ego
https://www.globaltimes.cn/content/1202815.shtml

Quote:
At 9.02 kilometers, Indian media claimed that the Atal Tunnel was the longest tunnel above 10,000 feet in the world. The photographer denied this, saying that the Chinese know the truth. China completed the Xueshan No.1 tunnel in 2017 in Huajiu Expressway, Qinghai Province, with an average altitude of 4,400 meters and a length of 9,065 meters, Xinhua reported.
