KP Purushothaman, Chief Engineer, Border Roads Organization, was honoured by the country on Republic Day with the Distinguished Service Medal (PVSM), for leading the construction of Atal Tunnel.

KP Purushothaman, a native of Kannur Kerala, overcame many challenges and completed the construction of the Atal tunnel on time. The Atal Tunnel is the pride of the country which was built by the Border Roads Organization under the Ministry of Defense and took ten years.

This district is happy to share that in the month of December, no accident has taken place therefore there were no injuries and casualties.

During the month of December 2020,total 44,533 vehicles have entered and exited through ATR.
In comparison of that, in December 2021 total 68,548 vehicles have transited through ATR.
Out of these 68,548 vehicles around 22,918 vehicles of other states have transited through ATR.

50% increase in traffic.

The maximum traffic in this month was recorded on December 4, in which a total of 6419 vehicles crossed the Atal Tunnel for a total of 3194 vehicles inside the district and 3225 vehicles outside the tunnel.

The month has been a challenging one, with sub-zero temperatures and being a La-Nina phenomenon year, black ice is forming in late afternoon hours i.e. around 3 PM. However, the district police force is up to the task and ready to welcome new tourists in the upcoming year!!

Record 7,515 vehicles cross Atal Tunnel on January 1, 2022, highest in a single day.

Estimatedly, over 60,000 people crossed the Atal tunnel on January 1 in these vehicles.
On an average, the tunnel is crossed by around 950 vehicles each day.
A record number of vehicles crossed the all-weather Atal Tunnel road on the first day of the new year. A total of 7,515 vehicles crossed the tunnel road beneath the 13,058-foot-high mountain in Himachal Pradesh’s Rohtang Pass within 24 hours on January 1, Lahaul and Spiti Superintendent of Police Manav Verma said, PTI reported.

Award for Atal Tunnel - World Book of Records

Atal Tunnel has officially been certified by the World Book of Records, as the 'World's Longest Highway Tunnel above 10,000 Feet', during a landmark ceremony on on Wednesday in New Delhi, said the Ministry of Defence on Wednesday.
