Re: Rider dies due to accident, allegedly caused by Traffic Cops in Mysore - Cops beaten up by publi

Since the pillion rider testifies for non-involvement of police and fault is with the driver - be it coerced out of him or not -, won't contest that aspect of this unfortunate incident, may the deceased person's soul attain sadgati.

But no sympathies to the police in general. Over the last 17years I've been stopped on the road on various occasions - once even when I was riding the 2wheeler with wife & 2year old kid, and despite pleading to them to leave me as I was going to hospital to get my ill kid treated - and asked for ghoos/lancha. I never get on the roads without all the vehicle paperwork in order or without helmet/seat-belt or drive/ride rashly.
Except on couple of occasions when I crossed the speed-limits, on airport road & E-city flyover, I've never been penalised for violation of traffic rules.

Without sounding biased against the law enforcement authorities, they seem to be on roads not as protectors of law or public - their SOLE intention seems to be the sadistic pleasure some gain by seeing other humans in pain.

Hope the senior authorities train/groom/teach/whatever them to be more empathetic to others, and hardwire that awareness into them - their responsibility to protect the laws/rules doesn't come at the expense of peoples' lives.

Re: Rider dies due to accident, allegedly caused by Traffic Cops in Mysore - Cops beaten up by publi

We live in a strange country. All over the world, people feel safe when they look at a policeman, in India, we feel scared. Cops have no business stopping vehicles where there is heavy vehicle movement. This is plain common sense. Everyone is aware as to why they stop vehicles and snatch away the keys. Two wheelers are the biggest victims. People trying to escape police is nothing new and it happens for obvious reasons. Agreed, the two wheeler should have stopped, let's say he is guilty. What about the cop who stuffed the body of the injured in an auto and let it go without any instructions or having anyone escort the vehicle? Now, when the same cops act innocent, it is impossible to believe they had nothing to do with the accident. Coming to the mob behaviour, it is totally not acceptable but incidents like these stand as testimony that everyone needs to play by the rule book especially the law keepers. When people react in huge nos. on such incidents, police are aware that they can not get away with such careless attitude.

Re: Rider dies due to accident, allegedly caused by Traffic Cops in Mysore - Cops beaten up by publi

For some unexplainable reason, I never had any unpleasant interaction with the police, both traffic and the other, but the same I can not say about fellow commuters.

People always complain how much they had to pay when getting verification done for passport. I did got it twice at two different stations (allowed the passport to expire the first time), both times they didn't even ask a rupee from me. First time the answer from the police inspector was "Sir, as a student you are the future, how can we demand money from you".

Was on the wrong side of the law many times with traffic police, but except for once, almost everytime I was let go off.

Took a wrong turn near Kadirenahalli underpass coming from Sagar college, stopped by police, told them that I am taking my in-laws to hospital and in a hurry, they let me go.

Parked car on the busy DVG road as the road was under repair and no vehicles could travel on that part. When I came back with the family, the wheel was locked. Explained to the SI what exactly happened. He wanted me to meet Inspector at the station. I refused. He removed the lock and told me, if there is a call from police station, I had to go. Waiting for that call from almost six months now.

Just last month, I was stopped in front of CM's house (where the new make-in India lion has come up), pulled me from the signal. Shocked asked why? They pointed at the number plate, said it can not be a sticker. Told them it is my friend's and I didn't notice. Surprise, they let me go.

Had to stop in the middle of the road once with wife and kid on a two wheeler as the vehicle in front of me suddenly decided to take a right turn, and by the time the vehicle moved, the lights turned red. Explained to him my predicament. They checked fine details, found none and let me go.

I know that these may be just one of the cases. I have seen that if you do not argue with the police and try to explain the reason why you had to do what you did, most probably they will listen.

Some people complain that Karnataka police unnecessarily target out of state vehicles. I was using a KL registered BS3 Navi as my office commuter till a year back and was not stopped by anybody even once.

Traffic police, standing in that hot sun and Bangalore's pollution is one of the most stressed people. Let us cut some slack for them and try to understand the difficulties faced by them.

Just before ending, while returning from Ooty with mine and my brother-in-laws' family, met with a major accident due to tire burst. My baleno (original) took a 90 degree turn, climbed 1-1.5 feet footpath, touched an unoccupied house and luckily, stopped.

The police came, helped us to remove the vehicle and clear the traffic and after checking that I am not drunk and everybody were safe, allowed us to go home while towing the vehicle to the police station. Claimed total loss for the car without any problems and not paying any money. All this happened on busy Mysore Road near Kumbalaghod.

I do feel most of the folks were misusing the situation & trashing the cops. Mob mentality is never justified & wreaks havoc on our system. Also breaking public property and equipment of law officers is just a burden on our system. It comes out of the tax payers money and these fools don't realize that they pay for it indirectly.

Though in this situation, we don't have a final statement on whom the fault lies, time and again this situation presents itself with Cops trying to stop vehicles unscientifically and motorists trying to evade. Hope some kind of procedure comes into place, where it is safe for both parties and can be implemented Nationwide.

May the deceased rest in peace. At the end of the day, the loss is for his loved ones. Hope they find the strength to go through this.

Video's quite spicy. I thought Mysoreans never swore . This is just built up anger being displayed by the public, not specific to this particular incident. Goes without saying they are venting it out the wrong way. I'm worried about those who got caught assaulting the authorities.

We are a good 100 years of catching up to do.

Notice how many people in society have nothing to do but gather at the scene of an accident, gawk and then gladly participate in a mob?

I doubt any of them hitting the cop is due to anger caused by the cop's actions (although they were disgusting in their own right). This is just anti-social behavior and it's so widespread, it's sad.

This is the reason why people have so much anger towards the Police. They are showing such disrespect to the body just pushing as if its some thing.

The co-rider who said Police were not to blame said the first guy was critical and was sent to the hospital by Police and they said they will take him to hospital too. This was 15 minutes after it happened according to him. He was un-conscious for 15 minutes. Too many loose ends.

This may be a OT-but trying to think of a reason why anti-social behaviour is so widespread across the world today. One thing comes to mind is that even a few centuries ago, man lived in somewhat of a control equilibrium with other animals. Human society was not so developed and certainly not dominant. The moment you stepped out of a village or town, there were other dominant animals. Now, in the 20th century, human population has exploded. Secondly, humans have dominated almost all animals (barring few micro-organisms). So the next level of conflict is only within the species. Thats why people resort to violence at the slightest pretext. Because the control mechanism of law and social order mostly set by humans themselves and can be easily violated (in the mind). Other natural control mechanisms are no longer relevant.

Look at the face of that mobster in blue shorts. Few hours before he was roaring like a lion on the road, in the station, looking scared like hell. Police has already delivered some instant karma on his swallowed cheeks. This is the story of every such lumpen elements who take law in to their hands. Beating up police may look cool in movies, but in real life it is another story.

Re: Rider dies due to accident, allegedly caused by Traffic Cops in Mysore - Cops beaten up by publi

Mob violence is NEVER acceptable in my eyes, irrespective of who it is targeted at. So, what happened here is shameful and deplorable. I hope the key people in that mob are brought to justice and incarcerated for a very long time. This type of people should not be allowed to roam the streets freely.

However, this and many other such incidents beg the question that why we as a country, in this day and age, not have a proper framework for the police to operate in these kind of situations and carry out such checks. I have myself been the victim of a road accident many years back when the police had placed barricades and left them well within the road with no visible signage, on an absolutely deserted and dark stretch when they left. I crashed into those barricades and my car had flipped. Who would be responsible, had I been badly hurt or worse? As a kid I once witnessed a policeman in Kanpur shove his stick "lathi" into the front rim of a moving motorcycle causing an immediate crash - all in the name of stopping a helmet-less rider to extort some money!
Most of the times the police will choose places where the probability of causing an accident or causing an immense traffic congestion is high. They don't bother to put proper signage of such checks ahead.
How and why are the police permitted to operate in such an arbitrary and thoughtless manner? Surely, not wearing a helmet or not carrying papers or not having a HSRP plate is not a crime worthy enough of putting anyone's life in danger!

Those very "Senior Authorities" (sic) got to where they are today through being the very best in inflicting pain to common people and gaming the systems, so I wouldn't harbor high hopes from them ever.

Re: Rider dies due to crash allegedly caused by Traffic Cops in Mysore - Cops beaten up by the publi

I saw something of the other side recently. I was waiting near HUDA metro station waiting to pick up my nephew and an alto driver jumped the signal. A policeman signalled him to stop - in fact walked in front of the car. The driver slowed down for an instant and then slightly accelerated in jerks a few times, pushing the cop out of the way and then fled. The policeman immediately flagged a biker, mounted on the rear seat of the bike and started a chase. Not sure how it ended but there are such drivers too who have no fear of the law. And with such drivers around, policemen also work in a very stressed environment. That's no excuse for what they allegedly did in this case but maintaining law and order is citizen's responsibility as much as police's.

Re: Rider dies due to crash allegedly caused by Traffic Cops in Mysore - Cops beaten up by the publi

There are so many things wrong here and it’s just another normal day in our country.

1. Motorist needed to stop, may be he was well versed with high handedness of police and hence didn’t stop. Local goons, rowdies are present in many places in Bangalore and bring disrepute to an otherwise nice city.

2. Police in Bangalore are very very corrupt. One might think police stations are there to prevent lawlessness but the primary purpose of a police station is to collect money . An average SI earns more in bribes than a highly paid software engineer . A CI earns almost the salary of directors and VPs of some firms and more over no tax. Low level Police officers are spending more than 40 lakhs to get a posting for 3 years, one can only imagine how much they are earning. Other than for the traffic cop at junction guiding traffic, I have no sympathies at all for these folks.

3. Mob justice: quite irrational and dangerous. With half educated aggressive morons on the roads, you never know what can come out of it. This is the reason why drivers run away leaving the vehicle after an accident occurs.

I don’t have any hope on our system and pray we don’t get involved with something so nasty.

Re: Rider dies due to crash allegedly caused by Traffic Cops in Mysore - Cops beaten up by the publi

There looks to be a different reason for the reaction from the public there: Apparently after the accident, the cops literally dumped the body in a goods auto, one leg hanging outside and sent the body away for next procedural steps. This callousness on part of the cops is said to be the reason that public reacted.

I wasnt there, so I dont know what exactly has happened. If the cops really did that, then it was wrong.

Neither did the public there do the right thing

Re: Rider dies due to crash allegedly caused by Traffic Cops in Mysore - Cops beaten up by the publi

The philosophy of our traffic regulation seems to be punishment rather than prevention.

There is little effort that goes in preventing signal jumping, overspeeding, license less driving etc, which are more of policy and high level decisions .

Infrastructure planning and road width and traffic flow is not modelled scientifically. and instead we have a pipe flow with turbulent traffic just oozing through like a clogged drain. We are bursting at our seams.

Instead what we have is the foot soldier traffic cops being given monthly targets for fines and frustration which causes them to flag down and cause chaos.

When driving in EU, I saw these smartly designed roundabouts which is idiot proof for joining the circle from arteries. Probably works for the vehicle density there but we can come up with something for our problem of plenty. In Delhi, especially Lutyens which is a planned city designed around roundabouts we have a whirlpool at every junction.

Regardless of our education, we are idiots on the road and it's high time design overtakes our stupidity and forces us to follow suit.

There is no motivation to follow rules in our country. If you stay within speed limit you will be honked out of it. If you are a millisecond later than the green flash, you'll be honked out it. If you keep to your lane you'll be honked out of it. If you try to give way to an ambulance, well you can't.
Every idiot has a board or a party flag on his hood , scary bullbars all around like a bumper car and drives as big a SUV as possible to scare the competition. Manufacturers are forced to make raised hatches and disproportionately chopped abominations that ensure that you sit higher than your enemies on your battle chariot. Because butch looks is paramount and masculinity is directly proportional to how high and scary you look. Road users are frustrated. Traffic cops are frustrated and when there is a confrontation , it's time to blow off steam for both parties.

This is not a commute. This is the Hunger Games.

Re: Rider dies due to crash allegedly caused by Traffic Cops in Mysore - Cops beaten up by the publi

Getting violent is the norm in our Country. What the people did is wrong. Now look at the people arrested and how they look. You can very well guess what treatment they might have got from Police. That is also wrong. I am not sure even courts or anyone cares about how Police treat people they arrest. Guess it happens both ways.

A reaction to what one does is acceptable in our society. I remember a Police constable who used wrong words to a woman bus conductor. He was beaten up by the people and taken to Police station in the same bus ! It was accepted.

We need to yet move to a society where people receive no punishment before a trial. But people get away easily, so we deliver punishment instantly
