Re: Automatic number plate recognition system to replace FASTags

This exercise is nothing more than a step forward in the making of a fully surveillance state.

Many sources publishing such reports have been deleted regularly, maybe this one will also be deleted one day:
Picture Intelligence Unit Aadhaar Based Surveillance By Foreign Firms

All these surveillance are there just to shut the voice of common citizen who raise voice against the misdeeds of the establishment, Nirav Modis and Vijay Malyas will still fly away unhurt since they are part of the power.

China is already few steps ahead:

The so called pandemic period was also a part of the exercises when a lot of things happened world wide on the open streets hidden from the eyes of the common people.

Creative people are one of the prime target during the regime of the fascism, why? Because they have the power of waking the senses of common people who are not able to smell the things around them in time. Look at our own freedom fight movement, a lot of freedom fighters were poets, writers and theater artists who paid vital role in the in the struggle by alerting people in their own ways. Watch the movie- What Happened to Monday to get the idea of the possibilities of such tech advancement which looks interesting in the beginning:

We are a community of automotive enthusiasts and all of us must have gone through the thoughts that we have to pay three taxes for owning one car, first at the time of buying it, second when buy fuel for it and the third in the form of 'toll tax' when we drive it. But can we raise the question on ensuring the accountability of all those taxes?

This new policy is a step in the direction of reducing any left out possibility of raising such questions.

Re: Automatic number plate recognition system to replace FASTags

I hope the number plates are tied up to some wallet like Paytm etc and not directly to bank accounts. This way it will be more secure as the owner just have to make sure there is sufficent balance in the wallet and does not have to worry about accidental deductions or overcharging of the amount which will be limited to his wallet instead of his entire bank balance.

Re: Automatic number plate recognition system to replace FASTags

For this number plate recognition system to work, the number plates need to be standardized so they can be detected with high accuracy. Nitin Gadkari is also looking at a proposal to make HSRP mandatory for older vehicles as well. In that case, it might work better but it will be a hassle with the transition.

I absolutely agree. This new proposal is nothing but an excuse to eliminate man power at the tolls and take away jobs.

Paym also offers FastTag. Per my understanding, that one is linked to wallet?

Re: Automatic number plate recognition system to replace FASTags

Can they not collect average life time toll of a 4 wheeler (different values for car and trucks) at the time of registration itself and make all the highways free.

Total toll collection in a year is around 50000 crore rupees. If we spread this figure to all two wheelers, cars and trucks sold in country every year, it wouldn't make a huge difference to already high taxed items.

Energy of ministry could be better spent in ensuring roads and highways are maintained well.

Isn't that what road tax was precisely supposed to be?
Until some minister came up with idea of PPP and toll to recover that cost for the private player

Re: Automatic number plate recognition system to replace FASTags

This sounds good but the issue with frauds that take place at toll plazas still remain rampant. Its common for truckers to get fast-tag which has the same vehicle number but it identifies the vehicle as a passenger car instead of a transportation truck , this reduces their cost of transportation by a margin. The toll plaza attendees can barely do anything on this. as the boom barrier just opens once the fast tag is validated vs full validation of matching the vehicle type.
Currently if the fast tag has low balance then the vehicle is stopped and made to pay in cash. God knows what will happen when there is no one to check.

Re: Automatic number plate recognition system to replace FASTags

Now a days we have traffic violation detection cameras which can read the number plate of the vehicle effectively and efficiently even at higher speeds. So, I think this can eliminate the requirement of slowing the vehicle at toll gate for the reading of the number plate. The boom barrier will also have to go if you do not have to stop / slow your vehicle. But it will be successful if all the vehicles are fitted with HSRP. Connecting the bank account with a registration plate will be another thing to do...

The ERP system in Singapore works really well and has been doing so for several decades. In fact they are working now on ERP2. I canít think of a better solution than that to be honest.

Re: Automatic number plate recognition system to replace FASTags

Govt should implement Y shape fork lane where in the system can route car with no balance / non detection of fast tag etc to one branch while the other branch handles the valid fast tag cases. Y shape fork with 2 boom barriers can achieve this in existing layout/budget.

RFIDs that are operational in apartments are very fast in opening the barriers because there is no payment validation etc. Valid tag = Open. FastTag takes more time because it needs to make an API call to check if the tag has enough balance or not.

If they simply set up multiple readers in the FastTag lane, by the time the vehicle reaches the last reader enough time would've elapsed in checking the balance and giving the go ahead. Is there something more to this?
This is not how fastag works. It doesn't query your balance. It just checks valid / invalid or BL tag etc against a local db that's updated every few mins. The validation is purely local and no no API calls are made to mapper for validation of individual tags.

Re: Automatic number plate recognition system to replace FASTags

I don't think this system will work. What if name is covered with mud? How camera will read it?

Also, though FASTtgs made toll cashless, I don't think it has made real difference to waiting time, esp. for Pune-Banglore highway.

The only viable option to eliminate toll booth is to implement GPS based toll collection system.

Re: Automatic number plate recognition system to replace FASTags

They should keep the fasttag system and make it open for public use as access control mechanism for other places (parking, apartment communities, events). All it needs is a reader and s/w to take action. Govt should milk it for the wide coverage it has been able to achieve.

I am always skeptical about # plates. It's fairly easy to get dummy plates made. Texas toll readers read both the RFID and snap a pic of the number plate to verify it's the right vehicle before deducting from the balance. Else you get a invoice in post for the payment based on the address of the RFID tag or if that's missing based on the registration address

Re: Automatic number plate recognition system to replace FASTags

Before we are done with adopting with one initiative, government comes up with another.

Where is the long-term vision and plan? So all the investment for fasttag down the drain then? Or would it just involve minor tweaks.

What happens to fake number plate issues?I am barely with satisfied (living close to a toll gate) fasttag, i hope government considers pro/cons before jumping to a different bandwagon. ( who am i kidding)

Why do we need all this number plate shenanigans when fasttag detection could be made better and remove the barriers. (Harder to clone fasttag than number plate)
