Karnataka - Vehicle got stolen? Now file a police complaint online

Karnataka - Lost your vehicle? File complaint online now!
This is a pilot project and I think it's a great idea since police stations are reluctant to lodge FIRs for Vehicle theft as it reflects badly on their performance statistics!

Quote:
BENGALURU: If you have lost your vehicle anywhere in Karnataka, you now don’t have to run from one police station to the other to register your complaint. You can just log into the Karnataka police website www.ksp.karnataka.gov.in and register a complaint regarding the theft online, and get the FIR soon after.

re: Karnataka - Vehicle got stolen? Now file a police complaint online

I have one Question. If your vehicle is from MH or DL or WB, will they accept the complaint in Karnataka, if it is stolen in Karnataka?

If yes, What happens, if the vehicle was stolen elsewhere and if one could get file a stolen complaint in Karnataka. Things are not clear to me.

If the car has been stolen while in Karnataka (regardless of where the car was bought/registered), the police should accept the complaint, why wouldn't they ?

There lies the problem, if i live in hyderabad and if i lost my car, can i still file complaint in Karnataka? Because, this would allow to file a complaint in Karnataka.

re: Karnataka - Vehicle got stolen? Now file a police complaint online

Vehicle theft and police, it's very much a joke! Be rest assured once someone loses a 2 wheeler, it's gone for good. Most likely thieves and police work hand in glove. I have heard this one too many times. It is said that like police, even thieves have jurisdiction. Habitual offenders pick vehicles and pay a cut to cops. They will have a cooling off period in which they won't take out the vehicle. Hence, if one has extremely high influence, cops can find your vehicle with ease, that's only because they know who has it.

Lost a Fiero last year around this time. Had to run pillar and post to just make cops file an FIR. A few months ago they closed the case and also sent some crap information by mail. Had 0 expectations of getting the bike back, and filed a complaint only to try and absolve me in case the bike got used in any crime.

@adityahemmige had sold me this bike as he wasn't using it. He was kind enough to give me a very low price. I spent a lot mechanically restore and made papers up-to-date.

The part in bold+italics is important (and missing in your query):

if i live in hyderabad and if i lost my car in Karnataka ,can i still file complaint in Karnataka?

Does it really matter where you live or what registration the car has ? If your car was stolen when in Karnataka, you can file the complaint, that's my understanding.

you still havent got my point. Apologies for not being clear in the first place.

Say, i never visited karnataka. I live in hyderabad and i lost my car. All i need is an FIR, to get the insurance claim. So, without any hassle, i can file a lost complaint in Karnataka and get done with it.

Now, i never visited KA. But lost my car in some other state. But, because of ease, i was able to file a lost complaint in Karnataka. Which state police is going to investigate/look for the vehicle? Who should be looking into it? in which state? if someone is going to look for it, aren't they looking in the wrong place?

This ought to answer your question

What you are suggesting is tantamount to fraud.

Technically, you can do it. Police in KA will ask you probing questions when registering FIR and if they find your replies not convincing then you will be in trouble.

But why do you want to take this route? Any police station in HYD will be able to take an FIR for stolen car.

if it is this easy, it will be misused. As per the initial article, you can get your FIR online without any documentation or other things.. if one is familiar with areas in karnataka, they will opt this route.

Regarding why? i think you must visit a police station and try to file an FIR. it is not that easy.

It is the era of CCTV cameras. The moment you mention where you last parked the car, both cops and insurance guys will start looking for CCTV footage around the location. ATMs, traffic signals, any camera that they can find, they will request footage. If it turns out that your vehicle was never there in the first place, you better be ready with an anticipatory bail.

Are you sure that the whole karnataka has CCTV camera's everywhere?

I mean no disrespect or any malintent, but just curious how the system going to process, if it is being misused.

I understand your point of view's but, the way our fellow citizens misuse the system, makes me raise questions on this move.

it would be appropriate, if the central government implemented such a system and forwarded all cases to the appropriate states, where the vehicle was last reported stolen. No? This way, the probability of misuse gets reduced drastically.

If you speak with people who work in insurance, you will know that they do extensive research before considering your policy claim. The number of false total loss claims have come down drastically in the last few years, thanks to CCTV cameras. Your car will not magically reach a point where it gets lost. If you tell them that you drove from Hyderabad to say, even a remote village, there will be toll booths, fuel stations, banks etc that will have cameras. You need to fabricate evidence such as toll or fuel receipts, food bills etc. Remember, you are toying with the idea of lying to the police, who profile people every hour. When you try to cook up a story and get caught, you surely will be in deep trouble.

By the way, where there are no CCTV cameras, there are conventional ways of checking with people, neighbours, police informants etc.

Bud, i fully agree with you on all points. But you have to realize how law works. "One is not guilty by law, unless proven otherwise".

So, all the CCTV lookup, validation is not going to prove anything. Sure it is wrong, but it cannot be used to prove the complainant is guilty. Absence of toll records doesn't mean, the vehicle hasn't passed. There are many legal beaten roads through villages to reach one's destination. If the complainant is a female, are they going to question her? I highly suspect this in the current state of affairs.

This is a wonderful move by the government. But it should have been implemented at the nation level or restrict it to Karnataka registered vehicles, so no one would even think of misusing it. Remember, the complainant's sole intention is to get a FIR for insurance purposes.
