Imagine your SUV getting classified as a heavy motor vehicle and getting fined 4000 bucks for doing 95 kmph . 95 kmph on the open expressway, although admittedly on a downhill section! This is my only challan in 3 years, despite having taken 500 - 600 BHP cars on the open road several times.

Absolutely echo your observations, GTO. There's certainly a perceptible hardening in enforcement attitudes lately, sometimes bordering on intimidation rather than education or fair policing.

Experienced this firsthand recently – received multiple erroneous speeding challans on a 120 kmph expressway section, despite being well within the posted limit. Thankfully, they were successfully contested and reversed through the official traffic police grievance portal after submitting evidence.

It does seem to underscore a potential shift towards target-driven policing over fundamentally fair implementation, which is worrying.

This did make me chuckle This is what happens when the model's training data only consists of "SUVs" like the Creta. Meanwhile test data has actual full-size SUVs like the Range Rover and the Defender 110, and the suddenly the model is outputting garbage Should be an easy contest, though.

There are loads of problems with our highways, but my biggest annoyance comes from truck drivers hogging the fast lane. No worse feeling than coming through a corner at a rapid clip and suddenly seeing an overloaded truck struggling to hit 40 in the rightmost lane. Especially bad on a motorcycle because any sudden braking while turning may cause you to run wide, upset the suspension, and in general cause trouble for you.

Re: 430 cameras to monitor speeders on Mumbai-Pune Expressway

All the while these same enforcers conveniently ignore wrong side drivers, signal breakers and auto/cab drivers parked haplessly blocking traffic.

They will catch a guy not wearing helmet, but ignore someone driving on the wrong side of the divider.

I am sure both parties(seller & buyer) benefitted immensely from buying the speed sensing equipment. Now it's time for the public to pay up for these expenses.

Re: 430 cameras to monitor speeders on Mumbai-Pune Expressway

I had a close scare *exactly* 24 hours back at Manchar bypass on NH60 (Nashik-Pune). I was in the middle of an overtake at the end of the uphill section when I spotted the dreaded Ertiga with the boot open parked on the side of the road near the end of the downhill section. Usually I stick to the speed limit but I was faster than usual on this particular trip so there was a risk of this happening.

I have already mentioned elsewhere on Team BHP, if you have to overspeed, always do it on the uphill sections. Use your horsepower there. But downhill + momentum + recently completed overtake meant I couldn't brake immediately even though I did back off the throttle.

Anyways, the speed limit there is 90 AFAIK. Considering speedo error, I was doing about 95 when I passed it. So maybe it was switched-off, or maybe I was within the limit of its caliberation error. Checked challans and there was nothing till last night, nothing now. So I guess I am in the clear for now.

Overspeeding is literally the only fine that us Punekars get fined for. Nobody bothers with jumping red lights, wrong side, helmetless riding, triple seat, crossing stop line, license, insurance, PUC etc.

143 days back, I was fined for wrong parking, the only problem with that fine was that the car was stopped, not parked. There was a capable person with a driving license on the driver's seat while the car was stopped on the left side of the road and I haven't been to that spot again to verify if there was a No Stopping and Standing sign there. Anyways I paid that fine. You win some, you lose some.

This has really gotten out of hand. It feels like nothing more than a money-making machine for the government. These tickets have become absolutely ridiculous.

I’ve received four fines for driving on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway at 67 km/h, where the speed limit was supposedly 60 km/h. The most absurd part? The tickets are dated November 2024, yet I received them only in mid-April 2025, but I suppose this tickets are from my recent trip to mumbai in the second week of April.

To make matters worse, there are no clear signs indicating the speed limits. It’s chaotic trying to figure out what the speed limit is in different areas. I’m completely fed up with how quick they are to penalize regular citizens, while showing zero urgency when it comes to actually managing traffic—especially in the Ghat sections of the Expressway.
During nights, the car halts completely for atleast 45 minutes in the ghat section.

No traffic control, no visible police presence, nothing. Fix that first before slapping people with hefty fines.

Period!

My previous post came from a place of pure frustration and anger. I’ve read through the entire thread, and it’s clear that all of us are equally frustrated with these challans.

I also relate to another BHPian who said they no longer feel like driving on the expressway—it just doesn’t excite me anymore.

Is there anything we can do to take action, apart from contesting these challans?

Re: 430 cameras to monitor speeders on Mumbai-Pune Expressway

I always use Wayz in the highway. This warns of speed cameras. There are a lot of false positives but that's ok. The speed limits in expressways ghat section is absolutely ridiculous. Anyone has explored the old highway and how the condition is?

At this point the use of expressway is expensive thanks to the exorbitant toll. Lack of good places to eat, and the constant fear of challan makes the drive absolutely worthless.

Re: 430 cameras to monitor speeders on Mumbai-Pune Expressway

If anyone of you is planning to challenge these fines then this might be helpful:

As per 2021 Motor Vehicle rule 4(a) for Electronic Monitoring, it is mandatory for the state government to notify about speed camera ahead.

Also as per rule 9, the notice of offence needs to be sent within fifteen days of the occurrence of the offence.

Re: 430 cameras to monitor speeders on Mumbai-Pune Expressway

Hmmm.... Well frustration is right but the intent is not. Yes it may be percived for extortion, but most road signages have some meaning to it. As some of the members mentioned that it is downwards slope. Well for safety it does warrant a slower speed to be able to control. Yes many mordern (and even not so modern) cars can manage these well, but in the safety for all these speed limits are governing. They are set by the weakest link and not the strongest. I have driven extensively in several countries and I do see dramatic reduction in speed limits especially in sloping terrains.

To sum up, just pay attention to the speed limits. Luxury cars have speed limiter which I use everyday as speeding fines cost an arm and leg in the place where I live ;-). It is about following rules, or lobbying to get them changed. Anything in between is a good burst out to cool our own nerves and lead a healthy life (It is good to get the frustration out and I totally understand with the frustration part). I am happy there are cameras and most people are then trying to slow down.

You make a valid point, but I can give you countless examples where there’s a 80 km/h speed limit sign, and just a few meters ahead, it changes to 60 km/h.

The expressway speed limit for cars is 100 km/h, but in certain sections, it drops to 60 or 80 km/h. It becomes really difficult to keep track and adjust your speed accordingly.

In Pune, there’s a Ghat section with a steep slope where the speed limit is 60 km/h. To avoid getting fined, drivers often brake harshly—some cars might not be able to handle it, leading to getting rear-ended.

Thanks and you actually iterate my point. Very respectfully, what I mean to say is that there might be some method to the madness (and yes, far from perfect). I have driven in Spain and UK and especially in the ghat sections on slopey roads I faced this madness. Going from 100 to 60 to 80 to 70 to 40 in a couple of Kms is daunting and I too felt that it can be kept at the lowest for a few kms at the least. Just that this madness is a bit more universal.

Also I do not like that over 70% of India drives reckless and gets away with it while a few get caught for 5km over the speed limit with hefty fines.

Re: 430 cameras to monitor speeders on Mumbai-Pune Expressway

Everyday I see posts of people speeding resulting in either killing or injuring people, but nothing seems to come off it. The authorities are most bothered about the GHAT section, where anything above 60 needs to be dealt with like VIP security. This is the state of our country where anybody and everybody is in constant mode to make a quick buck! To make it worse, just the other week, I saw a couple of teens in fancy cars early morning going well past 100-150 on the coastal road. Whatever fine there may be, its like loose change for them. There are so many better solutions that can be applied, but then how will the state earn?
