My 2021 VW Polo Highline TSI AT - Purchase and Accident

GRAB A POPCORN WHILE READING THIS

So, I was having an itch to upgrade from my 2017 honda city ivtec manual to a pre owned entry level german car. I started looking out for a decent octavia 1.8 tsi at first but it eventually came to a standstill as I wasn't prepared for the alarming maintenance costs in case the DQ200 gearbox fails.

I casually started looking out for a 1.0 tsi AT polo as I was always a fan of the polo due to the mod potential it offered and the final lot just hit the sweet spot with the GTI kit and portago wheels, It was always a looker for me. We also used to own a 2011 vento highline tdi which my dad just didn't let me keep due to the repeated failures of components.

I found a couple of good examples with service records but none of them just felt right, even though they had nothing wrong with it. One fine day while browsing Carwale, I found a Sunset Red Polo 1.0 TSI AT HL+.The exact colour and variant combination I was looking for.

The car was exceptionally well maintained and was under warranty till feb 2025 which meant I could go in for extended warranty if need be. The car had run 20,000 kms till date and it was literally scratchless.

I just couldn’t pass up on it and I immediately contacted the owner for all the details. He throughly gave me an overview and the reason why was actually selling the car. He had multiple offers from individuals and dealers but he wanted to sell the car to a fellow enthusiast who would take care of it the way he did. My love and compassion towards cars was very eminent from the start and he agreed to strike a deal with me. I did finalise everything but the most major part was still pending, Convincing my Dad.

So, my dad has never ever got a pre owned car till date. It was very hard convincing him to let me buy the car. At first, he just simple disagreed, following which I had to smother him everyday until he budge in and let me buy the car. The whole process took like 10 days and I respect the seller in being so patient throughout.

So, this is my first car that I’ve purchased from my own funds, it is very special for me. The car was very well kept as I’ve mentioned earlier and it had a couple of OEM mods done to it, namely Euro spec Drl’s, Auto headlamp switch and Aftermarket headlamps (These came at an additional price that I paid to procure apart from the vehicles cost)
The original fitments were also given along.

So, the date was finalised and I went down to Pune to get the car. All the payments were cleared and I picked up the car and documents. Everything went smoothly and I set out to a nearby car accessories shop which had good google review for my first set of visual modifications that I had pre-planned to do.

Apart from these, Dark sun control films are a must for me, which were already installed so I saved a few bucks on this part

So, I got this done by evening, grabbed some food and set out to the highway to come back home to Nashik.

The drive back was excellent, I was driving sedately throughout albeit some patches where I wanted to test how fast the car actually responds to inputs and damn, I was thoroughly impressed. I have daily driven a honda city 1.5 i-vtec and it is not slow as well by any means, but the feeling of the turbo kicking in is priceless

I reached home safely and called it a night. The next day was spent fixing small niggles such as replacing the weak LED footwell lights and replacing rear number plate lights to white Led’s, Fixing my personalised number plate, etc.

The next day happened to be new years eve and I had gone out to a villa with my girlfriend. We left the party around 1:00 Am and took an inner road as the main roads had police check points and I had dark tints which causes issues xD

As luck would have it, my happiness was very shortlived as I was following Google Maps guidance and it directed me to take a right turn, I took the turn at a speed of around 40 Km/hr and had the road in my line of vision. As soon as i took it, I saw a huge pit which was dug up and there were no barricades or reflector or stop signs whatsoever. I could either panic brake and nose dive into the pit essentially destroying my complete front end or I could fly through it and pray for minimal damage.

I just shoved in the A pedal and my newly acquired car which I didn’t even drive for 500 Km’s jumped from a height of around 3-4 feet and landed on all 4 wheels. I was heartbroken. I got out and saw that my front bumper was damaged and my radiator was leaking. I promptly called up a tow service who pulled up my car using the tow hook and places wooden plans to get it up.

The car is now at my trusted FNG which belongs to a childhood friend of mine awaiting repairs.
The front bumper, foglamps, radiator, condenser, intercooler and brackets are to be replaced.
No engine components have been harmed. Even the mounts and suspensions are in top notch condition.
The car is starting and working properly and there are not error signs at all.

I am still very devastated and I have no idea what should I do. He promises that the damage is not very serious and the car will return back like nothing ever happened but I have doubts regarding keeping the vehicle or selling it.
I am looking for honest inputs as I wish to do extensive roadtrips with the car if I intend to keep it.

Keep it if the damages can be repaired. Parts replacement is definitely going to cost you but if expense is manageable it’s well worth it. Polo is a legend and as an enthusiast you should own it and experience it (coming from a 1.2 GT DSG owner for 7 years). If not in a repairable condition selling it also will be difficult.
