Mumbai: 7.5 km Coastal Road walkway to open by June 15

Mumbai’s long-awaited sea-facing walkway alongside the Coastal Road is likely to open by mid-June. The 7.5 km long promenade connecting Priyadarshini Park at Breach Candy and the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link promises to be a paradise for Mumbaikars.

The seaside promenade is part of the Mumbai Coastal Road project. It is spread over 17 hectares and comprises a 20-meter wide walkway covering 12 hectares and a 5-hectare central median.

70% of the promenade area will be dedicated to green spaces, while the remaining 30% will have walking paths, cycling lanes, seating areas, and public amenities. The government also plans to build a Miyawaki forest, musical fountains, butterfly gardens, yoga tracks, open-air gyms, senior citizen parks, children’s play zones, and open-air theatres.

According to media reports, the entire 7.5 km stretch of the promenade will be opened to the public by June 15.

I am sure the leftmost lane along this stretch will be used for parking. Taxis / cars will slow down and create some bit of traffic in order to find space. Also instances of people randomly crossing roads along the route wherever possible will also increase. This is a given.

Point being, no adequate arrangements would have been done to accommodate all of this extra traffic

Excellent news! As a frequent visitor to Mumbai, am always looking for places I can walk in peace. There are precious few! The sea is such a blessing for any coastal city and as a public resource, it should be for the public and not hogged by the super-rich who can afford high-rise 'sea-facing' apartments. As such, any project that will provide pedestrian access along the sea is refreshing! Along with the Coastal Road, I hope the Coastal Walkway also keeps extending!

Mumbai is so lucky to have such vast availability of open & free for all open public spaces where people can enjoy an evening without the constant barrage of stuff that needs spending money on. Even a place like Navi Mumbai without access to a coastline is lucky to have something like the massive Central park.

It makes me envious that nothing of that sort exists in a city like Pune (apart from a bunch of municipal parks with limited timings) just on the other side of the western ghats. Newer parts of the city are completely bereft of such things. And this is the reason why riverside promenades are essential for the mental health of a city. Eco-warriors need to realize that cleaning the river and beautification of the river are not either/or activities. We CAN and MUST clean the river AND beautify the banks AND manage flood waters with functional storm water infrastructure. Because while not all cities have the good fortune of being on the sea coast, most of them do have rivers in and around them. The river banks need some love too.
