Beaf -- ee or ea? Well, I have been speaking and writing only English for over fifty years, and I still find this one confusing. sleap, sleep? speak, speek? week, weak? And where both words exist it just gets silly. Stearing wheal, anybody? ---It's a good thing I'm not a sign writer!

Egg Omelette Now it is time for me to giggle at the Indian usage: there is no other sort of omelette, just as with bread toast, the bread is always assumed when referring to 'toast'

While you are correct(obviously) Some eatings joints do serve what they call Tomato omelette & hence the specific mention of egg. Also you get something called as Toast for eating with tea which is not a toasted bread.

Cheese omelettes, mushroom omelettes, and just about anything could be put inside an omelette --- even including an egg! We even have Spanish Omelettes. But, if we have to differentiate, one with nothing inside it is called a plain omelette.

There are different sorts of toast, like French toast, melba toast, but they are all made out of bread. Then there are things like toasted tea cakes, toasted cheese...

I guess this belongs in Sam's English thread.

I never noticed the Meet! See what I mean about ee/ea confusion! And yet I clearly remember a childhood teacher telling us you eat meat!

It's tough enough for an English speaker, let alone a sign writer who doesn't know what he is writing.

I heard from one of my friend that for this Diwali some new crackers ("bombs") with interesting names have been launched from Sivakasi.

Some of them are SENSEX, NIFTY, "Lehman", "IKIKI" (you know what!) etc.. Of course the usual ones like Kuselan, Tashaan etc are always there.

Those guys are really enterprising...

I was send to Dhaka, Bangladesh for a software implementation in a local bank in 1997. I remember seeing some writings on the two main doors in front of the bank.

The door for customer entry was marked "Well Cum Here". Next door which is supposed to be for employees was marked "Dont Cum here"!

Now, don't ask me "stupid" questions like "Are you sure it was a bank..?" etc
