MUL tends to disagree that. Their air pressure recommendations for swift are different for the front and rear respectively.

I stand corrected Eddy. Thanks for the info. I am told the fifth spare tyre of Swift is smaller than the other four - is that true as well?

I think there was a case when the fifth tyre given out with the ZXI ( with company fitted alloys) was smaller than the other four. A hue and cry was raised and the company then started giving a spare of the same size.

For the other variants with steel rims, the spare is the same size.

Eddy

As per my understanding, Swift takes 33 in all the four wheels? Isnt it? Generally, for me its only 2 persons and my kid in the car. And I am filling 33 always, anything wrong you foresee ?

dreamdiesel, this incident shows that your heart is in good condition, some people would have had a cardiac arrest in such circumstances.

Everyone should buy a tire pressure gauge and keep it in their vehicle. Check tire pressure (including the spare) from time to time.

I never belive these JK, MRF and Apollos, the quality is not trust worthy in high speeds and in high temprature.

The company recommended pressure is written on the B-pillar of the vehicle. Generally Maruti recommends a slightly softer pressure than ideal so that the ride is soft and the driver gets a floating kind of feeling. Most ignore that advice and fill about 10/15 per cent more air for better fuel economy. For example, company recommendation for Esteem is 23 on all four. I put 26.

Dreamdiesel, I am glad that you & the other occupants of your car got away unscathed. Undivided Indian highways pose unique challenges.

From your description above, here is what I think happened : Your swift swerved not because of a tyre burst, but rather since the two left tyres of your car were on a low-traction surface, while the two on the right had sufficient grip. I have witnessed this sort of a slide several times on our highways, when we take half the car off the road to make way to oncoming traffic.

I think the accuracy air pressure becomes critical in low profile tyres. I dont know if some version of Swift comes with low profile tryes with bigger rim.
In my Fusion, the pressure should be 31 al-around but if the car is fully loaded, it is 37 is the front and 41 is the rear.

Scary indeed. You and your co passengers are seriously lucky to have survived such an incident without any problems whatsoever. Take care mate. Probably going a lil slower on the corners in the future might be a good idea too.

Yes, indeed a scary experience. I initially wrote an email to JK tyre customer complaint and in 2-3 days I was contacted back on phone. I was told to take the tyre to the JK tyre office Behing the Unity buliding campus near City Corporation. Took the tyre there. The JK tyre rep. checked the tyre and started conlcuding that the burst was due to external damage. I will try to upload the pic of the tyre.

The big gash on the tyre is almost 3 inches long and is on the side wall. Not at the bottom where the tyre has contact on the road. There were 2 people who were trying to convince me that its due to external damage. I made it a point that if it was due to external damage then there must have been a tear at the bottom. I was looking for a complete tyre replacement.. They have some kind of warranty they have about the depth of the threads remaining on the tyre and depending on that the warranty is coevered. They gave a discount of 1k on the same tyre if I intended to purchase one.

Seriously lucky get away with that!!!

There is a possiblity of that also GTO. I remember all of my left wheels on the tarmac as I took the right curve. Then the mind went blank and all i was thinking at that time was let it get over fast and and all of us with the car be safe... After the incident, looking at the tyre wall with the big gash and the opposite bus driver also noticed the tyre burst did I conclude that it was indeed due to a tyre burst.. I have taken similar corners in the past maybe with faster speeds but always the car felt well planted on the road...

GTO I quite get your point. It once almost happened to me when I was in a Bolero several years ago and the vehicle swerved like crazy when two side tyres went on the soft morrum surface. Now I know what exactly had happened then.

But in this case why/when did the tyre burst?

37 and 41??!! It is too high. Is it mentioned in the manual? 41 cold tyre pressure will mean ~44psi running temperature!! There is a maximum pressure that the tyres can be inflated, something like 45 psi methinks. Pumping 41psi is dangerously close to the limit.
