Yesterday, while going home at 1 am in the night, I ran a red light. Was quite surprised when my boss, who's car I was driving, reprimanded me for doing so!

Now while most lights are glowing orange at that time, this one was red. But I ran it nevertheless. And it wasn't because I didn't think there wouldn't be any traffic cops around. Honestly, I was under the impression that all signals cease to be in force post 12 am.

Was I under the wrong impression all this while? Or was this red light just an oversight from the traffic dept. guys.

Most of the signals go yellow blinker at nights but still there are many signals which work normally during night also. These are for high traffic or accident prone areas. I think you should follow them

Does this junction have high volume of traffic even at night? Logically, it would make sense to leave the traffic lights on if its a busy intersection.

If this was Chennai, you'd get a police notice in the mail.

if its busy all the time , then the signal will be on 24 hrs , if not , in the nights it will be blinking amber .

All signals in the 3 arterial roads in chennai are switched on 24/7. This was started very recently.

From my experience there's no traffic at 1am on Mumbai roads(most anyway) so as long as you checked the intersections I don't see what was wrong about the whole deal.
PS-I'm sure all these red lights are oversights by our pandus.Doubt whether they are bothered at all about accidents and the like,especially when they're busy sleeping(which is all the time,day or night)

The way I go about doing at signals is , if anyone honks me at the red signals and adjacent vehicles jump it after observing for oncoming vehicles, I switch on my emergency blinkers and go ahead. This helps me a lot in safety aspect

Mr.Blur your boss will be receiving a signal violation ticket for this, be ready for a mouthfull of good words from your boss :D:D

See to that from next time you do follow, in Singapore even in the midnight the people will be standing on the roadside for the walk signal to turn ON even if there are NO vehicles coming

Red lights mean just one thing round the clock - STOP.

Guys, that's exactly what I concluded later. It's logical all right to do this. However, logic seems to be applied selectively by the traffickers. Because there's a junction near my residence that's pretty busy (relative to the average night traffic) and has seen more than its fair share of late night crashes. Yet, the signal here goes orange in the night. Hence, my ignorance.

Yeah. Though the Red light did throw me for a moment I managed to check the other lanes before going through. Will be even more careful in the future.

Sheesh, a signal violation ticket, how? They have that in Mumbai? Never heard of it! I better prepare for more than a 'few' 'good' words from da boss!

And Singapore... It's not called the 'Fine City' without reason :D

Is this in effect in Mumbai?

Not many behind you will expect you to stop.
I generally switch on the hazards for a moment when I feel that others behind me would not expect me to stop.
