Team-BHP - How and when did you learn to drive?

The actual driving test was the lame two minutes drive around the block, but a dog ran across the road and ended up demonstrating emergency braking. Lol.

I got the Indian license by sitting the actual written test. But they never asked me to take the driving test.
Months later, with my Indian License and an IDP, went to the US.
Passed the written test on my second try. Passed the driving test on my second try.

The actual driving test was to go for a round around the RTO office and take a reverse at the last stretch. But as I was a graduation student (read : educated), I was put onto the simulator before the real-world test.

This thread is intended to know how many of us are actually trained for vehicle driving by a professional agency (need not be nessarily reputed ones like Maruti training school etc.), as against being trained by a friend/relative.

Would be interesting to know, since i know a lot of people who like to rather get trained by relatives/friends/spouse then join a professional school.

Lets keep the poll anonymous, i think a lot of us might not want to be identified as non-professionally trained Team-BHPIans. But guys, be true. :)

Regarding myself, i was trained by a normal Motor training guy in Delhi, but he was good and enforced a lot of discipline in me. I learned on a humble M800. :)

I taught me how to drive, where's the option for me to vote? :D

I used to ask a lot of questions to understand how a car functions. If we had youtube back then I would've skipped the question part also. As I grew up I started taking my maternal uncle's car out when he used to visit us, I was 14 then.

My father never let me drive his car until I reached 18. But the moment I did, he got me my driver's license made and gave me his car. I mean he knew I had learned to drive by then :D

A "Professional Training" school. Their professionalism is a question mark given how they train, but they got the basics well enough.

Also, the reduced hassle of documentation helps in case of a professional training agencies. The trainer having control adds to the safety quotient.
The training school I went to had cars with dents, but clutch was awesome. Learnt driving in Maruti 800.

I learnt 10 day of basic driving through a professional driving training agency. Though, I am happy that due to my job requirement of new product testing, I was trained by professionals with years of experience behind them followed by specialized overseas training.

It made me learnt the nuances of driving as well as understanding traffic and safety regulations.

Got driving license after going through a driving school. But learned from a dear friend, Favaz Majeed. He taught clutch modulation and driving in first gear without accelarator input! Thank you Favaz, if not for him I would have been an ordinary driver. He helped me become a proactive driver than a reactive one.

My dad taught me driving and am more than happy about that. I thank god i was not trained by a professional training school. The way he patiently taught me the very basics and guided me every time i made a mistake while driving, am sure no professional will give that time or that personal touch. In a professional driving school they will teach for say 15-30 days & once the time period is over its up to you to make mistakes and learn further. In my case there was no time bar! Even after decades of driving, when i drive with my dad i love the way he still shares the basic road safety awareness with me!

So on contrary am happy i was not trained by any professional agency/driver! :) I consider myself to be super lucky in this aspect.

My feelings exactly. I too was taught by the family driver in a 1975 Mark II Ambassador. Didn't say much, just taught the basics while I practised around.

Me too. Most driving schools have cars with 2 sets of pedals, and a trainer who's more interested to pass time than teach you anything. He'll simply apply the brakes where there's a mistake, leaving you to figure out what's right for you.
