In our home where my parents stay, we can park as many as 6 cars (tested ok ) in our front yard plus car porch (only one car) and any one of them can be taken out without moving another.

Wife will own the Civic and I will use the 800.
And if her car is blocked by mine, I will be parking my car on the inside always. No matter when I came.

You not married I guess.

Mooza, what is on the other side of your compound wall.
If its the open road a large rolling gate might help.

Knowing the cost of construction these days, I doubt you will be able to do the changes in 50-60k.

Please try to make a rough draft using ms-paint.
It will really help everyone who is trying to help you.

Here are a few pics and the plan of my house. The garden is partially seen, which we are thinking of converting to a parallel parking bay. The spiral staircase may also have to get shifted, if we go ahead with the plan :

If you can park 2 cars next to the spiral staircase, the third can remain where it is currently, that way you wont have to shift the spiral staircase.

Thanks Vasanth. This is a good option.

But my parents are particular about not having another separate gate at the other end of the front compound wall (vaastu reasons, I guess!). So, when I widen the existing gate, the spiral steps will come in the way of parallel parking. Anyway, since it's a steel add-on staircase, we should be able to shift it to the other end easily, I think.

A bit OT, but come to think of it, I realised that my problem reflects the problem of Bangalore's stupendous growth. In 1980, if you owned one car, you had arrived ! Never did we think we would have a car for each person of the house. Never did Bangalore think that business would boom this way. What I am trying to do in my home, Bangalore is doing to it's streets and other infrastructure.

It has shown me how important it is to think several years in advance and plan these things with lots and lots of care when things are still at the drawing board stage. As my German friends told me recently (while executing a JV here), in any major project, at least 75% effort should be in the planning stage, and 25% in execution, which becomes a breeze. But in my case, I guess it was only 25 % in planning, with the rest 75 % confusion, as seen !

So you are planning to have only one wide gate to remove 3 cars from the compound! I would like to see the plan once you have finalized it. Just how WIDE are you planning the gates to be?

The gate has to be really really wide or there has to be a lot of distance between the gate and the cars.

This was planned while we built our house. We can easily Park 5 Large(say CRV's) cars inside the gate without obstructing the path of any car.

No offense but you should keep the garden, its really rare to have a house with a garden with the concrete jungles everywhere these days

For new houses, Stilt parking provides one solution.

mooza, this is not exactly a big problem. You need to talk among yourself as to who leaves first and who leaves last the next day. And park accordingly.

We have 3 cars at home, and our parking is exactly similar to yours. But the road next to our house doesn't have much traffic - so we can park on the road, if need be.

@smartcat, traffic on our road has become totally chaotic over the past 5 years. That's why we feel the problem more now. Already there is enough honking to split our ears . Our Escort got bumped badly from the rear by another car (15 k expense), when it was parked outside. My Maruti (now sold) met with a similar fate twice.

@vasanth, we may widen the gate to parallel park 2 cars, since the Escort is comparatively a little less used .

@bottle, we feel the same way too about the garden, maybe we will grow a few plants in the portion released from the present parking area, after modifications.

Hey No need to destroy garden or break anything , What you need is electric lift based parking , This is similar to the arrangement which is there in garage to hoist the vehicle up. So one car is parked on the floor and other is lifted above it ( vertically) you can remove that wire mash and replace it with this arrangement.

I do not know proper name of this kind of parking but you can see see one in Manipal centre on dikinson road , In my office we have a few I can post a photo of the same If you need.

The total budget should be roughly same.

Wow, thanks Amit, that's a different solution you've suggested ! I wonder, how exactly does this work ? I have seen these type of parking lots in Lido mall, I think, but never gave it a close clook regarding the operational aspects. Will try to look at this.

Another major plus point, I feel : the car ramped up cannot be stolen easily ! So my Scorpio can sit on top, and be safe, I guess.

Thanks & cheers

All indian houses are built with single gate and long driveway.

If you need to put 3 cars side by side then the whole front compound will be covered in 3 gates. It can be done if you have a really large house not in the typical 60-40s that you find in Bangalore.

We've had this problem for 2 decades. Person who leaves early also arrives early so it can never sync properly.

Hi Mpower,

I park my Bimmer & Swift in my garage which is 16*16 area..both facing road and any car can be taken out when required.

I had 2 modify the gate to have parallel parking for both cars for 10k

Regards,
Indy
