Lamborghini survey hints at future powertrain

Lamborghini has included a survey on their websites. While the general theme of the questions is regarding sustainability, one of the question asks about the type of powertrain technology Lamborghini should invest in - combustion engine, full electric, plug-in hybrid or fuel cell.

Lamborghini currently doesn't have any hybrid / all-electric model on sale. The carmaker's only electric car was the Sian which had a 48V e-motor along with a 6.5-litre V12 engine. However, the production was limited to only 63 units.

Rivals Ferrari, McLaren and Porsche have hybrid or all-electric offerings on sale. It is likely that Lamborghini could include a hybrid version of one of their popular cars - the Urus SUV or the Aventador.

Lamborghini Technical director Maurizio Reggiani, has told the media that an electric offering from the Italian carmaker must meet their standards of performance, which includes a top speed in excess of 300 km/h, perform 3 full laps at full power and speed on the northern track of the Nürburgring and driving dynamics. It is said that current electric technology won't be able to meet the above requirements.

Re: Lamborghini survey hints at future powertrain

The thing with Lamborghini is that their cars are all about the theatre and the wow factor you get while driving them. If they do make an all electric version of the supercar, how is it different from the electric cars of say a future all electric Ferrari or the present day Taycan? Think about it, what differentiates the marques today? It's the noise, the character of the engine and how it delivers power packaged with handling and looks. An all electric Lamborghini may continue to have the jaw dropping style and the handling characteristics of Lambo's of the yester years but the sound and nature of the engine will be forever lost. Exotic cars sells in negligible volumes and hence must be either exempt from future regulations because their footprint compared to a Toyota that runs all it's life polluting unlike the Lambo which is probably busy being a garage queen or the occasional track car. The alternative is more realistic and bleak - here supercar makers will have two categories of vehicle, one which is an all electric hypercar which is sold on the basis of badge value and exclusivity while the other car which isn't road legal but has an unrestricted engine, handling and design but can only be used in select locations such as tracks and cities that allow them.
