What Bike ?? CB1000R/FZ1/Hyosung650N/HD883 Iron

Hi Guys,
Im finding it really difficult to make up my mind with all the choices available today.
I love the inline 4s , I still have my 1972 Honda 750 Four .
How different are the CB1000r and the FZ1.
I like both for the upright riding posture, dont care too much for the crouched riding position on the newer bikes.
Also considering the Hyosung 650N , has both the looks and cubic capacity and comes at a very attractive onroad price of 5L.
Only negative is that its a V Twin and not a inline 4 .
Anyone has any opinions on the Hyosung ?

Hi!

The Hyosung shares its engine with the Suzuki. The SV-650 to be precise. Suzuki GB Motorcycles/ATVs: SV650S: Technical Details

Now, the Hyosung is priced at ~5L and the others retail at almost double the price, so it depends.

With the Hyosung, you might feel the itch to move up, but the FZ-1 or the CB will be a keeper for sure. Though in India, you won't be able to max out the Hyosung on a daily basis or even monthly basis, still, an I-4 is an I-4.

Between the CB & the Yamaha, I would go with the Yamaha. Yamaha is priced almost a lakh cheaper & does all things almost as good as the CB. CB looks smashing though, especially with the one-sided swing-arm.

You can't go wrong with either.

Good on you to go for nakeds. They are much easy to use & ride. Why not look at Monster 796?

A review you might like to read Hyosung GT650R Review - Motorcycle.com

I think you should go for the Honda or Yamaha for a simple reason as they must be faster.
I only advice for the 650 if you want a MV Agusta look alike bike. The 650 is also a very hard to ride bike. :(

Do write here if you want to say something. Can I see your 1972 bike >?

Most Reviewers have not been happy with the quality of parts (Plastics fairings) and engineering (braking) on the Hyosung, infact though it is priced close to 5L the view is that the Kawasaki 650 is a much better and much more livable vehicle.

The others are atleast twice the price if not more and cross 10L. You should decide if you want to be in 5-6 range - Hyosung / Kawasaki. If in the 7-9L range the Harley

If 10-15L you can look at the FZ1, CB etc.

7-9 L can get you the Monster, the 796 along with few Harleys.

FZ costs just short of 10L I believe and the CB costs 11,23,470 OTR, Bombay as per the Honda web-site.

The sole reason for folks to avoid the Kawasaki 650R is its commuterish position, stock exhaust note and that feel.

Another strong contender is the Bandit.

If I were you I will pick the FZ1, no doubt that CB is a looker but I would prefer my big bike to have power and lots of it at that, FZ1 produces around 150 compared to 25 less than this of CB.

GT650N is surely seems like a VFM package but there are already numerous horror stories floating about the A.S.S and for someone like you who has experienced the smoothness of a Honda I-4, this will be crude, very crude.

And yes, in case you decide to pick FZ up make it a white one, it looks smashing in white.

I checked the 796 yesterday itself and it comes to Rs 9.74 on road. The Harley range in this bracket is the 883 superlow at 5.50 (del), Iron 883 at 6.50(del), xl 883r roadster at 7.50 (del), Xl 1200x forty eight at 8.5 (del) and xl 1200n nightster at 9.97 (del). This is based on their website that shows prices exshowroom delhi, so i guess in Bombay they would be more.

If you ask me and also based on reviews i have read on various national and international sites i would go with the Honda CB1000r. The bike is refined and has the futuristic looks to match. The riding position is also good and she handles well in both traffic and open highways. The FZ1 i have read gives out alot of heat and also heats up real quickly. The last thing i want is people telling my my 10 lakh bike looks like its smaller sibling..

You have a valid point but going by the current trend on the part of Automobile manufacturers you just can't avoid this, e.g CBR 250 looks like VFR1200, 3 series looks like 7 series, Jetta looks like Passat and so on. Even Honda's CB twister try to looks like the bigger cousin CB1000R.

Oh Ho Ho...what a way to herald the announcement of weekend, hopefully your quest gets you closer to your dream bike. Probably you can refer to a couple of ownership threads on FZ to understand them better. First n foremost would suggest you to decide on why you need the bike for? would it be for outright performance (which you sound undecided on)/relaxed cruising/adventure riding/jack of all of these...

I believe , close your eyes and see which bike you want to be on .Bcos , once you get a bike it should not happen that "I should have gone for that bike ,thinking !"

Re: What Bike ?? CB1000R/FZ1/Hyosung650N/HD883 Iron

Wow that was quick !
Thanx for all the opinions guys.
To answer some of the questions, somebody asked what the utility was going to be - what I'd use the bike for ?
Well Im a 40 yr old guy maybe this is a midlife crisis or something but Im definitely not buying the Bike for speed or for long distance riding.
I already have a 39yr old Honda CB750 Four that I use regularly in and around Bandra.
Even if i buy a new I dont really think my weekly mileage could be over a 100 km mostly due to time constraints. So riding will be limited to a 20-25km radius of my residence.
I've looked at /test ridden the Harley 883 Iron
Will be checking out the Hyosung 650N today .
The V twins provide the torque but nothing really sounds as sweet and as smooth as a Jap I4
So looks like its going to be a toss up between the FZ1 and the CB1000R

If I was in your shoes I would blank out all the rest and decide between the CB1000 and FZ1 with a slight inclination towards the Honda. Why? coz I looks fabulous and there too many FZ's out there.

My 2 cents...

My vote would go for FZ1 or CB1000. Sound of inline- 4s is FANTASTIC. Nothing else comes close. None of Single, v-twin, L-twin, parallel twin, triple and even v-4 sound as exciting. Between the two, FZ1 may have some edge because of lower price tag and higher BHP.

Pick up the honda and get over your midlife crisis with a smile. If you not going to rip it or undertake high speed runs on weekends extra power is not what you need. With the Honda you get stunning looks and ample power for your 20/25 kms run around.
You could also consider the harley if you want to live an alternative lifestyle on weekends. The sense of occasion on a Harley is hard to beat.

Re: What Bike ?? CB1000R/FZ1/Hyosung650N/HD883 Iron

If you love riding long distances and quick rides in city , go for any of the harley's,they are very comfy and have great riding position, fill in at any pump , don't bother lookin at octane ratings anymore, its got some character and no issues of over heating or other stuff you face with the sbk's.

Sportsters would be the best bet if you travel around the city and up to 150km on long stretches.over that you should look at dyna or softail family.I ride my bike everyday and I totally love it..unlike super-bikes I don't think twice before I take it out.
