EICMA 2018: KTM unveils the new 790 Adventure

KTM has taken the covers off the new 790 Adventure at EICMA 2018. The much anticipated machine comes in two variants - the 790 Adventure and the offroad focussed 790 Adventure R.

790 Adventure promises to be a lightweight and fun adventure motorcycle, which can tackle offroad conditions with its 21 inch front and 18 inch rear spoked wheels, coupled to Avon Trailrider tyres for touring capabilities.

Whereas the 790 Adventure R comes with Metzeler Karoo 3 tyres for proper off-road terrain use.

Both motorcycles are powered by the 799cc parallel-twin engine seen on the 790 Duke, making 95PS of power and 86Nm of torque in this application. Dry weight of the motorcycle is pretty low for an adventure tourer at 189 kgs.

Electronic aids include - Offroad ABS, Rally Mode, Offroad ride mode, Cornering ABS, traction control, optional quick shifter and optional cruise control.

Features fully adjustable WP suspension at both ends - with 240mm of travel at the front and rear.

LED lights are used on the KTM 790 ADVENTURE R as the main headlight, taillight and indicators. KTM 790 ADVENTURE R’s strong footpegs have been developed for superior ergonomics and to accommodate street or off-road boots in a wide range of conditions. The footpegs have rubber inserts, which can be removed.

When fully loaded for adventure the bike underneath you needs to be built to last. The steel trellis subframe was developed to be compact, lightweight and also strong enough to carry a full load under the hard conditions that can be expected when extreme adventure riding.

The signature die-cast, open-lattice swingarm is precisely manufactured and has been optimized for stiffness and stability while still offering excellent flex characteristics. By using a direct link for the rear shock, complexity and parts are reduced. The relatively long swingarm aids in traction, stability and suspension setup.

Various media sources speculate that the 790 Adventure might be launched in India, post the introduction of the Duke 790 in the Indian market.

The bike is spending too much time in the pipeline. If it hits the dealers in the summer of 2019, it would be awesome. The Yamaha Tenere 700 is being designed toe to toe with this. For whatever reason, Tenere 700 is not coming out till summer 2020. Very good competition for Africa Twin. Exciting times!

Small Displacement Adventure is what we all have been waiting for, lets see how they price this

Can someone shed some light why do have plastic boxes around the engine, looks very ugly in my opinion

That my friend is the fuel tank. KTM's answer to BMWs lower center of gravity.

This is in no way small displacement. Probably pushing close to a 100 horses at 190 kgs dry?

Oh That explains, well I was looking for something in this CC range, small in relation to the aircraft carriers that BMW and Tigers are

Call me old school, but that tank is a eye sore, I have a feeling that in few years they will move it elsewhere

Wow - doesnt it make the fuel tank vulnerable to stone hits / rock hits ??

It is completely protected by a guard apparently made of carbon fibre (lighter).

Go figure!

Strange. Carbon Fibre although light, cracks rather easily (I think) as compared to say - Aluminum. I haven't come across many (any?) examples where CF is used in the off road world, especially in parts that are supposed to take hard hits / abuse

There are helmets made of carbon fibre. I doubt they just crack. Theres something called a carbon fiber weave, which probably absorbs impact as opposed to bending or cracking like ultra rigid metal. Anyway, i am no materials scientist, so will shut up before some einstein here rips into me lol.

I watched a walk around video posted on youtube by a media channel which mentioned this. Obviously since the bike is not on sale yet, there are no official specifications out on the web for us to read.

Re: EICMA 2018: KTM unveils the new 790 Adventure

Got a chance to look at this bike in person at the 'Motorcycle Live 2018' hosted at the NEC - Birmingham,UK. The seating position is really good, not that KTM can go any wrong but I really liked it. I could touch the ground with the tip of my toes on both sides with a seat height of 840 mm (I am 5'7").

Also, checked the Yamaha Tenere 700. Compared to this, my personal choice would be the KTM as the Tenere seems more purpose built. The road going Adventure version would be the popular choice. Hope this is launched in India at a decent price, which would most likely kill the market of the Tiger 800.
