Coming to the bike, oh boy this looks mean ! I had a chance to ride my friends RC390, that adrenaline rush was just wow. |
Clarkson is a personal favorite.
Coming to the bike, I first rode this in 2018 when they updated the suspension from the original bike. They were other changes like an updated electronics package and cruise control but the main stay has always been the LC8 engine. This engine had an on off switch. You could cruise all day like a good boy next door under 5/6000 rpm and everything was friendly, with near perfect fueling.
The second you go WOT and the rpm passes the 7000 mark, the devils descend and you are trying to hang on and not have your head bitten. There is not a single MC in the world that will present you with a more intoxicating cocktail of acceleration, chassis response and telepathy like this V twin. It is at home on straights, twisties and the circuit.
I have and still do ride very fast bikes, even my own bike is unrestricted running a custom map but being a naked sans any protection, the Super Duke R is on a different level all together. Not a bike for every taste but for a few, nothing else will do.
It was comfortable, decently ergonomic and spacious without being bulbous.
The braking and clutch were top notch and the new suspension was talkative and took well to road imperfections.
Last year on an overseas trip I took the updated 2020 for a spin. A friend was swapping his BMW 1000RR for a Panigale and the showroom had a new KTM 2020 standing. Extensive changes have been made to the 2020 model and the star again is the updated LC8 engine. Hats off to the engineers to come out with the most powerful iteration of the engine yet while still conforming to the tighter Euro norms. The engine traits had changed and now instead of chewing your head, it only peeled your skin from your arms while presenting a more linear acceleration. Still brutally fast of course and KTM could have given just 1 wheel if it wanted to on this thing because the front hardly likes the tarmac. Also, sudden acceleration and braking on the KTM will give you pain in places you did not know could hurt from acceleration and braking.
It was very very agile, relatively comfortable with unreal chassis response . Had all the latest electronic wizardly but I did not play with. Everyone should experience the Super Duke R once before Greta Thunberg takes it all away and motorcycles run on wall chargers.
