According to a media report, Harley-Davidson is likely to launch the Pan America 1250 in India later this year. The bike has already been listed on the Indian website.



The Pan America 1250 is an adventure bike that is powered by a 1,252cc, liquid-cooled, V-twin engine. It makes 148 BHP and 127 Nm and is mated to a 6-speed transmission via a slipper clutch. While V-twin engines are synonymous with Harley-Davidson motorcycles, the Pan America's engine revs higher and features overhead cams with variable valve timing.



The Pan America 1250 comes equipped with fully-adjustable Showa upside-down fork suspension at the front and a monoshock at the rear. Braking duties are handled by dual 320 mm discs at the front and a single 280 mm disc at the rear.



The Pan America comes with a host of advanced systems including hill-hold control, cruise control, cornering ABS, lean-sensitive traction control, semi-active suspension with adaptive ride height, adaptive headlights, tyre pressure monitoring, riding modes and a touchscreen instrument panel.



The Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 will compete with the BMW R 1250 GS in the Indian market.

While a promising product, I doubt if anyone would bet their money on Pan America over GS given Harley’s stance on India.

I am guessing pricing will be similar to the GS, about 20 lacs plus. With Harley's exit fresh memory for everyone, you have to be really brave to spend this sum on a brand that pretty much packed up and left India.

It's just my opinion but, as soon as a motorcycle is classed as an "adventure bike" it takes on several requirements road bikes don't need to have.

Because it will be ridden on rough dirt roads, rocky roads, muddy slippery slimy roads and "no road at all" roads, a good suspension is the first requirement. It looks like Harley has addressed this with their new bike.
Because of the same road conditions, falling down is to be expected so light weight is just as important as having a good suspension if not more so and the bike I see could be called anything except, "light weight".
Can you see yourself out in the middle of nowhere with that motorcycle laying on its side in a slimy bog? How on earth would you manage to pick it up to get going again? Remember, you might be all alone and the ground isn't nice and level like it would be if you were on a paved road.

I also see no need for 140 horsepower unless it is to get that heavyweight up that 45 degree hill and even for that, all that power will do is to throw rocks further down the hill as the engine roars and the rear wheel spins.

I think Harley got a little too far "outside of the box" with their thinking on this one.

It's the main argument about all the large adventure bikes isn't it? But HD hasn't really gone out of the box at all, if anything it looks like they've stayed right with the pack.

The power falls right between the Multistrada Enduro and the 1250 GS. The weight at around 250 Kgs is again on par with the two.

I lament about the same thing all the time. But it appears people like us are few and far inbetween.

Most of the market here who can afford to buy motorcycles above 8 lakhs happen to be over the age of 50 and a with waistline of over 40. Not exactly the supermoto demographic.

At the very least we do see a new breed of adventure bike rider popping up these days, who are willing to properly off-road their 200kg adv bikes. But even for this kind of rider the Pan America would be a hard pass. The likes of the Tiger 900 and Honda Africa Twin will have to do for now. Maybe one lucky day the 890 ADV and Tenere 700 will grace us with their presence as well.

I still think it's a step in the right direction by Harley. Long overdue considering their launch video speech about heritage and legacy offroad.

2021 Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 ADV launched in India at Rs 16.90 Lakh.



The motorcycle will be made available in two variants - Standard and Special.
While the Standard has been priced at Rs 16,90,000, the higher-spec Pan America 1250 Special will cost Rs 19,99,000 (all prices are ex-showroom, India).

Make or break model for Harley Davidson! But then I am really doubtful that someone will skip Tiger Rally, Africa Twin, Multistrada and the big daddy of all the 1250GS and choose to spend their money on the Pan America.

The only thing going for the Pan America is the exclusivity factor. It will surely be a bike that will make heads turn and that might convince some people to go for it.

Its a new, unproven product, bound to have teething problems as any new launch.
Im not sure if somone will buy this over a GS or a GSA. The difference in prices is not much.

This could open up a new market for HD in India but a albeit a very niche one. Looking forward to seeing how it fares when going head to head with other competing bikes of the same class.
