Hmm, while on the topic, I'm curious too. Where in Bangalore can one get one ? How, and how well, are these serviced ? Are parts available ? Are the sales 100% legal ? Is maintenance more or less like a car's or way more ? Are reassembled kits close enough to the originals (i.e. whats the knowhow level of the guys doing this) ?
(Hope Bajaj/Honda solve this and launch a decent 400 soon ;) I'd live with that over uncertainty.
Blaze, Although you may be able to find some decent prices here, there is nothing like bringing your own bike down. One that you know YOU bought brand new, and you KNOW its history and paperwork.
Even if that means paying a bit more, its worth it in the long run. Thats only if you plan on keeping the bike and not just selling it off once you get here.

I guess its not as easy as it looks like. If it was so easy we would have hundreds of cars/bikes imported by students who go abroad to study. There are lots of formalities involved in importing the bike. It should conform to all the homologation rules set by the VRDE, should have minimum roadworthiness for a period of 5 years from the date of import, etc etc.
So i guess it would be better off to buy a 2nd hand bike here itself.
I also have my doubts whether this can be done if you're not EMPLOYED abroad - for eg if your visa status shows you are a student.

agree: .. you have to have the resident status from the country you are importing the bike / car or atleast a work visa that proves you have been there for the period of time and you have used the bike / car yourself and not bought just before you left.only then will you be allowed to import the vehicle under the transfer of residence.

I have a work visa. I'm depressed man....I agree with some of you who've mentioned that it ain't as easy as it looks + the indian customs officials....LORDDDDDD I HATE THIS...
anyway lets hope for the best....

I so agree with you man. You get connected to it. Its difficult to see it go. You know how she behaves and how she likes to be treated.

If i'm not wrong I came across another topic in the Motorbikes forum here that you sell imports too. Am I right?
How much would a 2006 GSX cost in India? Brand New? It costs 12000USD here including taxes. Insurance is horrendous except for a couple of companies that are cheap. But let me know.

check this out. It says we cannot import above 800cc. That means all motorcycles over 800cc are illegally or whatever you call it, imported , maybe using the loop holes in the system or plain under the table transactions.

U'll be jailed if u sell it off before 2 yrs from import.
to add to rtech s points, you get a bike with clean papers and stuff unlike most of the bikes imported in our country. so even if blaze lands up spending a lill' extra, it would e worth it.

Hi Guys,
I had a few questions...
1) How does the duty structure work if I import a bike from the US in CKD form, separate shipments? The bike has been registered in the US.
2) Would I be able to then register this bike in Gujarat?
I would really appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction.
BTW I own a 2005 Yamaha R6 and a custom Harley chopper.
You can import only one vehicle while coming down on TR.
The duty will be charged at 10% depreciation, so the 160% odd duty would be calculate on 80% of the price of a new bike.
The bike can certainly be registered in any state in India. The road tax in Mumbai for an imported vehicle in 21% of the landed value after duty.
