Tata Sumo 4x4 - where can I buy one?

Dear friends,
I am contemplating buying a 4x4 Tata Sumo to use as my expedition and long drive vehicle. I have ocassionally come across 4x4 Army Ambulance Sumos during my travels and have also seen 2 threads in Tbhp about the same. I also remember to have read somewhere on this forum that I could buy a 4x4 Sumo brand new in the north-eastern states on India but I cant seem to find the thread anywhere. I also monitor the mstc website for army vehicles coming through the auctions but have so far never seen 4x4 sumos come up for auction.

I would ideally like to pick up a used army auctioned sumo from somewhere, work on the vehicle thoroughly and convert the exterior looks to that of a landrover defender and use the vehicle for my regular highway runs.

I am ready to start the project but I am unable to find any used 4x4 sumos to use as the project vehicle.

Enquiries in Tata showrooms in central india have also not yielded a positive response from the sales department so far.

And I also understand from my discussions with stalwarts that 4wd conversion of a 2wd sumo is also difficult and technically challenging.

I request the forum members to:

1) Help me procure a used 4x4 sumo; or
2) Help me buy a brand new 4x4 sumo; or
3) Help me convert a 2x2 sumo into 4x4 sumo.

Looking forward to everybody's help in this project.

Regards,
Dr. A Ghosh

Re: Tata Sumo 4x4 - where can I buy used or brand new or convert 2x2 into 4x4?

The Tata Sumo Victa website does show the price list for the Sumo Victa 4X4, so I am assuming you should be able to buy it brand new. The only problem I see is that the list mentions "BS3", which means you will not be able to buy it if your city (Nagpur) has moved to BS4 norms. My city (Pune) has moved to BS4, so it will be tough to find one in Pune showrooms.

Not sure how well updated this website is, as the new "Tata Sumo Gold" is missing here. It is quite possible that they have a BS4 version out by now.

About buying this car in the north-east, here is a post that might help:

EDIT: Just found out that the Sumo Gold has its own separate website.

Finally I managed to locate this post by TBHPian "jeepster", in which he has posted a Sumo 4X4 which was on sale:

You can PM him to find out if this vehicle is still on the market. Who knows, you might just get lucky.

Regards,
Bullitt.

First of all there is nothing as a 2X2 sumo. there is only a 4X2 sumo, where the first digits represents the number of wheels in contact with the ground and the second number denotes the number of sheels power is provided to.

You can look out for 4X4 Sumos on the web but they are very rare to come by.

You may convert a 4X2 Sumo to a 4X4 Sumo, there are threads on converting a 4X2 jeep to a 4X4 jeep. The only problem is finding a competent mechanic.

Re: Tata Sumo 4x4 - where can I buy one?

Sourcing a Sumo 4x4 (new or old) will not be easy. Instead, why don't you consider:

- A Tata Xenon 4x4
- Tata Safari 4x4
- Mahindra Scorpio 4x4
- Mahindra Thar 4x4

Each offers something different, so take your pic (based on your requirements)

Getting the parts will be a nightmare of an exercise.

Re: Tata Sumo 4x4 - where can I buy one?

@ GTO: I do not see any problems in acquiring a brand new 4X4 Sumo, apart from the BS3/BS4 thing. If he can work his way around that, then I guess it should be fine.

Besides, the "Sumo 4X4 Economy BS3" priced at Rs.611499/- (ex-showroom) looks like a steal of a deal to me. None of the other vehicles listed by you come close if bought brand-new.

Of course, buying a used 4X4 Safari or Scorpio shouldn't be too difficult, the Thar and Xenon will be hard to find.

Is the TL 4X4 still available?

Out of the options listed above i would recommend only 1,2. The third one is risky and may not be worth the money and time spent.

Alternatively you could also look at Mahindra (various models) or Tata Safari both are a very capable 4x4.

If you can get the new 4x4, then I will strongly suggest you go for the TC. The NA is simply under-powered.

To the list above, I would also like to add the Mahindra Bolero 4x4 DI turbo.
I guess the reason why you are looking at the Sumo4x4 is because of the price tag, as the Safari, Scorpio and Xenon are all above 9 lakhs. But I think the Bolero Di 4x4 is in the same price bracket as the Sumo 4x4.

Another reason for recommending the Bolero Di 4x4 is because it has a rigid axle in the front and there are more of these on the road than sumo 4x4's. Also a lot of parts are shared by the Bolero 4x4 with the stock 2WD bolero DI, so you will have an easier time finding parts.

Plus if i am not mistaken, the front axle in the sumo 4x4 has an IFS setup, a much more complicated setup than the rigid axle bolero DI 4x4. Can anyone confirm if the Sumo 4x4 has IFS?

So do have a think about the Bolero Di 4x4 (Only available in BS III) And it was available to order when a friend of mine inquired about it in march 2011 here in Siliguri W.B.

Yes, Sumo 4X4 has IFS set up. Even Thar has IFS.

Does anyone know if Tata is working on Sumo Extreme that was displayed at the last Auto Expo? Was it only a concept or is it going to be introduced also?
