Its a great choice for Goa weather and roads. Good AC, small footprint, superb views and good 4x4 ability. I use one on a daily basis in Bangalore and in the city it is perhaps more comfortable than anything else i have ever driven. It suits Goa even better.

Re: Is the Jimny a good choice to learn offroading?

Thank you all very much for very detailed opinions ! I have much more clarity in terms of what the car offers and the overall "lifestyle" aspect of taking it off-road.

I primarily live in Pune for the most part and stay in Goa with my parents during the holidays. At the moment, I do not have a car here in Pune and that's why I wanted to lock in on one and learn as well.

Main takeaways that I got are
  • I need to be good driving on road before I even try and take a vehicle offroad
  • Jimny will be a great offroader but it will have its flaws if used as a regular car for regular purposes
  • Off-roading itself is not a simple lifestyle so going all in on a vehicle that does specifically that wouldn't be the wisest
  • If I do not intend to take it offroad very often, there are better options

For me, I will definitely not take it offroad or even try to do that immediately because I need to learn. Even if I was to purchase another car, I'd still not take it on long trips unless I spent good amount of time with it in the city and was confident with it. Even if I take it on a first proper off-road session after 4-5 months, I am alright with committing to the car as it isn't too bad for other normal purposes.

I took another test ride and I just liked the car a lot. I couldn't bring myself to enjoy the Grand Vitara after driving the Jimny. Grand Vitara was definitely much more comfortable but the Jimny had a feel of its own that I couldn't get elsewhere.

I will test a few more (Thar, Kushaq etc) and then try and decide rationally

Some people and some vehicles just form a bond and end up a perfect match. There is no such thing as a perfect vehicle. But there are some vehicles which some of us, will forgive all of their shortcomings. One such is the Gypsy (in my case) and more recently, the Jimny. Definitely.

Even though I presently own the Thar and the Gypsy, somehow I tend to be more critical of the Thar than I am of the Gypsy. This is probably the “favourite child” syndrome. The same will apply to the Jimny in my case. Had they launched the Jimny around the same time as the Thar was launched, despite those deadly Jeepy looks of the Thar, I would have bought the Jimny.

Because there is one simple reason. My Heart has always said Gypsy, since 1985 or 1986 when I first saw one. Despite having lived with dozens of Mahindras which my Dad used to use when he was working in the Plantations.
My Heart now keeps saying Jimny ever since it launched. And it is just a matter of time before I get myself one. Sadly, in my case, my Gypsy will make way for the Jimny. Grandpa will make way for Grandson.

The Old Order Changeth, Making Way for the New.

All I am seeking to say here, is just go right ahead and follow your instinct and your heart. You only live once. And your Instinct is very rarely wrong. And the Jimny, honestly is an extremely well engineered and capable vehicle.

I think you will not regret buying it.

Re: Is the Jimny a good choice to learn offroading?

An update: After a few days of thinking, I went ahead with the decision of getting my Jimny in Kinetic green on 15th. Did my first highway + small ghat run from Pune to Goa this weekend and loved every bit of it !
