@ urs frienddelhi - Pls let us know what other current available SUV's did you consider and why did you zero in on CRV and Pajero?

Guessing your budget south of 20L, from the current market you have the Suzuki Grand Vitara, Hyundai Tuscon (not sure if still available), Ford Endeavor, to your choice of Honda CRV and Mitsubish Pajero. Upcoming launches in '08 you can only expect the Chevy Captiva, while Toyota Fortuner would be available in '09.

The Grand Vitara is a very fast vehicle and also quiet heavy on fuel. It is serviced by Maruti so it would be a good choice but I have heard it's resale value is quiet low.

Pajero

Pajero is the one. It is more versatile. You may want to check to see if you can still buy one. I understand the Mitsubishi moderator recently closed the thread.......

I was in the market for something similar, if you don't mind fuel costs get the CRV,

but Honda is launching a new 2.0 ltr CRV soon,

I would suggest you to check out the new Endeavor instead of the old Pajero - Better interiors and a good engine.

I agree with the first part of what you said. the two-tone paint job on the Pajero looks odd to my eyes.

About the CRV being better looking, it doesnt stand a chance.

I think you are referring to the older Vitara XL7. The newer edition is many lakhs cheaper, less powerful and has been in the market only for 5 months. Won't know about resale value so soon.
