Hi Folks,

I am back after an year at a similar cross road where I have almost decided to upgrade to the Fortuner (from the current Scorpio).

I did consider the Outlander and the Endeavour, but decided to go for the Fortuner. I did like the Outlander for it's looks and the ride quality. But concerned about the mileage and the running expense.

Now coming over to the Fortuner, I need to place the order next week and am a bit confused about the colour to choose and need some help.

I plan on getting a White Fortuner and changing it's colour to dark green mainly for my wildlife outings and I like the dark green colour (have seen my friends Terracan where he got it changed to Green and I like the way it blends into the forest). By doing that will the warranty be void or is that not an issue. I only see the positive side of getting the colour changed but not able to think about the disadvantages.

Any inputs on this would be appreciated.

Depending on the inputs, I may go in for a White + Change the colour to dark green or stick to the Silver which my wife has liked ;)

I would like to bring to your notice that you will kill the resale value of your car

and would suggest to stick with silver or white dont change the colour

ps you will also be required to change the colour on the R/C

Why don't you try out vinyl wraps of your desired choice of color. They just stick over your OE paint.

I really don't know how it would look on a premium SUV like Fortuner. But then it is being extensively used by commercial vehicles in the S&D channel.

In any case they would cause very little damage to your resale value when compared to painting your SUV green.

And you have the luxury of peeling your green skin off at will.

To change color cleanly you will have to remove all the lights, trims, door pads, bumpers etc. Basically you will have to strip down the car completely. Otherwise, it will clearly show that it has been painted over and when you sell it you definitely take a hit for a repainted vehicle. Besides after market paint jobs will never give you he durability of an OEM paint booth.

Overall I think it is a bad idea. I suggest you get it in black so the other animals will think it is an Elephant.

I see your love for wildlife outings that you are ready to compensate your fortuner to green colour so that it blends and it makes much sense. I wont say dont go for green colour or go to stock white/silver as that will not be realted to your purpose. And since you have made up your mind then i would like to suggest that do go in for green colour with dual tone as in bumper and side protection as dark grey and green on a body. Which will give it very offroading cum stylish looks and will solve your purpose . If you want to reference to how it will look you can google green prado . And i dont think i have to tell you this but still go in for the best paint job with the best trained guy as most of the part of your fortuner will be off from it. And you dont want all things in piece and then some bits and screws left on the ground with bunch of numb monkeys figuring out where these bits and pieces belong to when everything have been mounted back.You know what i mean .

Thanks for the inputs. Points well taken.

In case I get the repaint job done, it will happen through the dealer (Nandi Toyota Hosue rd). My friend who recently bought a new Prado Land Cruiser from that dealer got it changed to Green and I plan to get a similar thing done.

Resale value is something I need to give some thoughts on. Need to evaluate that and then decide.

I am inclined towards the Silver Colour which looks great. Need to decide it in the next couple of days as I have to place the order.

Sudhir, in fact its going to be a double jeopardy for you since you lose out money on resale (lower value as suggested by others) + the money you spend on painting it green upon purchase.

Well, let me congratulate you on booking the Fortuner and having the patience to wait for it in the first place!

Now, about the colour change, I'd give a thumbs down as well. It literally kills the resale value. You have to register the colour change with the RTO.

Btw, I have a question. If the same (colour change) is not registered with the RTO, what are the consequences one can face?

IMO, premium is a relative term and there is no yard stick to measure it. What is premium for me need not necessarily be considered premium by the world.

Whether you are getting it done from the dealer or not, the original color will still show on your RC book. Like all others have confirmed, it is truly a very bad idea. I am sure, since green it is not a color offered by the company, in case the car would require a touch up later, it could be difficult to match the paint shade again.

Silver would be a better option as it is easier to maintain and this particular color/shade being on the lighter side does not show minor scratches which will be very well visible on a darker shade. Dust is also not seen on a silver color car.

changing the colour will affect your RC book - you need to have the colour change endorsed in it. it will tend to bring down the ultimate residual value of your vehicle in the used car market because people will always be a bit wary of a vehicle being sold in a colour other than the original one it came with.

you just might find that Grey Mica shade to be useful for your need, which will then obviate the need to change the colour.

I wonder why on earth these SUV manufacturers cant offer a Dark/ Jungle Green shade - indeed it is a shade that suits this type of vehicle very well indeed!

Even the chaps at Scorpio - a few years ago they used to have a lovely Henna green, Turf Green and a Dark Green all of which they have discontinued completely. No idea why!

the vinyl idea mooted by others is a good idea if the vehicle is being primarily used in the city environs. If however you take it into the jungle the vinyl is bound to get scratched and maybe even tear off.

I am just curious, how does changing the color to dark green help.

Its not like you will be able to drive all the way inside a forest and park next to a wild animal.

If the only reason for colour change is for your Wildlife outing, It would be cheaper to get camouflage type cover stitched for your SUV. Which can be put on the vehicle during your outings.

Shouldn't the resale be a consideration if it has to be sold earlier. If you hold on to it for long, it should not make much of difference. Its a Toyota and you can have it for very long without problems.
