The answer is no, the color depends on the base coat not on the clear

I dont have issues with color. Color is same.

My car has several repainted panels, and some of them have different gloss. The color is same. So would a nice clear coat solve the issue?.

Thanks for the info!

I pulled this from another post titled "DIY : Cleaning your MAF Sensor for Rs 120"

IPA is Iso-Propyl Alcohol.

By the way IPA is the perfect way to wipe down a car after a proper wash. It dries up the car and removes the static charge.

So if my car is attracting dust like a magnet then it is most likely due to Static charge.
Question: Is is really safe to wipe off with IPA? Will it not wipe off the polish aswell?

Hey, i have a 2005 swift, there arent many dents on the car, just 2 on the front doors from auto rickshaws. and a few scratches here and there..
I had gotten the boot lid painted from a local garage a couple of months ago, but the paint quality is shabby. Now that i have read about automative painting, i know that it can be described as an orange peel.
I would like to get the car overcoated.
I stay in Vashi, navi Mumbai... it would be great if any of you could share experiences tips and where i could get it done from and at what approximate price...

during Aug-2011, i got my OHC repainted (overcoat) and and also got taken care of some rust that had developed. total cost came out to be approx. 39000.

before you finalize on a place to give your car for painting, please ask them to show you some cars that they have repainted (full overcoats) recently; that is the best way you can check the quality of their work. i checked with approx. 11-12 garages before finalizing the place and only three were such those could show me their full overcoat work, rest all were the ones which mostly do paint at small scale (2-3 panels mostly) and not full overcoats. try to find a garage which does get overcoat jobs on regular basis. try to find a place that has a dedicated paint booth.

for your swift, overcoat should cost around 25000-30000 including removing all the dents and should take around three weeks.

oh god! 25k+ thats a lot!
i read earlier in this thread that some one got their baleno overcoated for 17k.
i cant spend more than 20k :(

try a few garages and get their quote; you may get a lower quote within your budget. highly likely, the garage quoting in range of 15-20k for an overcoat would not have a dedicated paintbooth. irrespective of the cost/quote, make sure to check out their recent works to ensure you do not end up with bad workmanship.
also, are you sure your car needs an overcoat? is it possible to just fix the scratches/dents and give it a nice polish job to restore the shine? i would suggest you check once with Kamyo Detailers (check TBHP directory) for polishing part.

Overcoat can be done easily without stripping. Keep 1500-2000 per panel/piece depending on size. 20k is a decent budget if the body is in good shape otherwise.

^^ even for an overcoat, the following will definitely have to be off
  1. bumpers
  2. head and tail lights
  3. side indicators
  4. window trim("garnish patti")
  5. number plates
  6. ORVMs
In most cases, the roof needs no overcoat and could do with some polish

Yes,@1500/panel,it would work out to approx 20k for the whole car

Dear Friends,

I am looking forward to paint my 2010 Swift Dzire, as over the years, wear and tear has spoilt its look. And few body shop works at MSM haven't been done well. The nano thin paint work at MSM makes even a slight scratch to get the paint peeled off.

Now I am looking to completely repaint the car with the same color (white), with the same quality (at least near-factory quality). Now please suggest to me the price and place to get quality work done in Chennai or Bangalore (I am willing to bring the car to Bangalore if the service provided is top notch).

Kindly help me. Thanks in advance.

2010 is a fairly modern car. Its hard to believe that the paint has deteriorated so much that it needs a repaint. I know Chennai is hot and humid, still 6 years is too less for a modern day car!!

I don't think anyone will be able to match factory specs. The "experts" who can come close to that quality will charge a bomb.

In a factory, the car body gets dipped into a tub full of paint. That coating will always be better than any amount of after market spray painting. The factory also has an oven where the pain gets baked and bonded to the body, I am not too sure if this is done by repainting shops.

If you are looking to sell this car in a couple of years, do keep in mind that the "repaint" won't be taken lightly by the dealer/buyer. Repaint is usually associated with an accident.

Have you looked at any other options? Have you checked if 3M can help you with doing some treatment to avoid further damage to the paint?

Why don't you post a few pics? A good quality detailing job will take care of most issues.

Hi,
I am in Gurgaon and i have had such a superb experience from a road side mechanic. His paint job is as good (seen from a naked eye) as the OEM paint. Even without a dust free booth the result is amazing. The color matching is perfect, the gloss is deep and brilliant.

I showed the paint job at the ASS and they were also stunned. Compared to what the ASS does, this local roadside guy is miles ahead.
Used DuPont paint and best quality clear coat, 3 M polished and rubbing and bosch polishers with wool pads.
As far as price is concerned, a full repaint of a car costs around 15000.

The reason i am writing the above is that it is possible to get a great paint job done at a local garage at extremely good prices. Some people might argue (and they may be right) that a factory job is better, but i feel that i have been getting near OEM results.

So look around and you may find a local expert in Chennai.

All the best

Really?!! I always thought the tub at the factories contained zinc electrolyte for applying a rust prevention coat on the body in white, and paint was sprayed either manually or robotically. Well, you opened my eyes. Thanks!

Not really.

In the factory paint shops, the bare metal body gets dipped during a process called 'Electrodeposition coating' (generally called ED coating). This is to prevent any rust formation in the future.

Painting, be it at factory or workshop, is always done by spraying multiple layers of paint - just that in factories, the spraying is done by pre-programmed robots. (as in the attached image)

The paint shop is temperature-controlled, and after the paint cures, a final step of melted wax coating is done in an oven. At least this is what I used to see at the MSIL factory.

To the OP:
I understand your situation - my car, a dark blue Ritz ZXi picked up a lot of dents and scratches thanks to its initial years spent in the reckless Gurgaon-NCR traffic. You are definitely better off with a white car!

An experienced paint shop can do a good job of repainting your car to a close-to-factory finish. With white colour, the colour matching is generally easier (except for pearl finishes). Unless you intend to change the original colour, only the exterior trims, lights and emblems need to be removed. and the interiors need not be stripped out. Do ask around for quality paint shops with temperature-controlled booths (MRF Autocoat is a professional brand that comes to mind, though I don't know if they are still operational) and decide on first hand reviews.

Why don't you post a few detailed pictures of your car so that others here can also give you suggestions on alternatives like paint correction?

May bad. Yes it the ED bath and not the paint bath. Still, I am not aware if after market paint booths do this. May be you do and thanks for pointing this out. I was not aware of MRF paint booths!:)

What about a prospective second buyer, will he/she be open to buying a repainted car?

:OT
OP, Have you thought about the new PU wrap (I don't know a correct term for this) that is catching the fancy these days. Its a coating done on top of the existing paint and can be peeled off any time you want. Its sold as a DIY kit in US. I am not sure what damage the peel off may cause to an already weak paint. I have seen the PU job done on some pretty expensive cars.
