I recently read this particularly good article explaining the IC engine. Tons of very nice (and interactive) animations and it gives a very good primer about not just the principles of operation but also the practical engineering and construction of the engine.

The site also has equally good (but more than a bit technical) articles on camera lens and optics and gears.

Thje following is not necessarily an animation, but this archaic video in my opinion has the absolutely best explanation of how a differential works.

I have linked the video to the part where the actual demonstration starts, but interested people may start watching from the beginning. it is quite informative.
