2002 Honda Accord 4 cyl idling issues!

Hey guys,

I picked up a 2002 Honda Accord Lx 4 cyl in April 2011. The car had 97k miles on it and is a manual transmission. Have done close to 7000 miles and everything was perfectly fine.

Offlate, i have been facing issues with the idling. The car idles normally at all times even with the AC on. While driving i face this really weird problem. On coming to a halt when i depress the clutch and hit the brakes slightly the engine rpm goes down to almost 0(jus above 0 on the tacho). This happens once in a while and i do not face this issue everytime i do the above. And when this happens i just tap the accelerator a bit and the idle comes back to normal, just below a 1000 rpm.

What can be the cause for it? Would like to have your valuable opinion before i consult a mechanic so that i have an idea of what could be wrong instead of blindly believing what the mechanic tells me.

Thanks,

Adi

I been facing a somewhat similar issue and while reading up came across a possible Idle Air Control (IAC) valve problem. Might be worth checking out.

In addition to IAC valve, o2 sensor might also be at fault here.

Just check the air fuel mixture pipe. It usually goes on without a clip & has a tendency to come off.

Even i think its the idle air control valve. Will be taking the car to the mechanic today evening. Will keep you guys updated. In the mean time more suggestions are welcome.

I guess the CEL should come on if there is something wrong with the O2 sensor. Not sure though.

Get the throttle body and all associated sensors cleaned. Its a clear sign that they need cleaning.

+1 to that. My OHC Vtec showed similar idling symptoms. All she required was a throttle body + sensor cleaning job (IIRC, cost 400 bucks at the authorised outlet). Importantly, the service engineer blamed the conical K&N filter for dirt accumulation. You running one too?

GTO,
Thanks for the valuable input. I will get the throttle body and the sensors cleaned immediately. I was planning to go for a conical filter but decided against it. I jus put in a K&N stock replacement filter a week back. The major problem i face here is stop signs where one uses the clutch and the brake simultaneously. Its become comparitively better after the filter replacement. I dont know whether this is actually true or it is just psychological.
