Dear bhpian,
I would request you to throw some light on an issue that cropped up on my i20 2009 oct model.( mileage 6200+ kms, fourth service done about two months back and 200+ kms run after the last service)
My car has remained stationary for long periods since I prefer using my bike due to traffic snarls in Delhi.
Two weeks back I took my car for a ride after a months gap. On covering about 2 kms I had to stop on a traffic signal. As we received the green light I tried to accelerate and move the car forward it wouldnt move despite being in 1st gear and clutch pedal released, I was baffled and tensed with all vehicles behind me honking.
With the help of others i managed to push the car to the side. I tried calling all helpline nos but none responded probably being a sunday and it was 7pm.
After about 10 min I tried starting the car and the clutch was functioning now. Again after 20 min ride I felt the clutch becoming hard and sticky, somehow I reached home without much problems.
This problem has never occurred before, and I remember the clutch had become harder after the last service, but I didnt give much thought to that at that moment.
The next day I took the car to the hyundai service centre and got it checked by the technician, the drive was uneventful. He said it was working fine and said, since the car was stationary for a month, the oil circulation was not happening, and that might be the reason for the problem. However (he added) if the problem crops up again, while the car is being used without long gaps, then I should take the car back for further checkup.
I used the car extensively last week and the problem never came back, so I believed that this was due to the car being stationary for a long time.
Yesterday morning I dropped of my wife to the airport and went to my office there was no problem but while I returned back home in the evening, I felt the clutch was becoming harder and sticky when I encountered a traffic snarl.
Can somebody tell me what is happening with my car, a car which has done only 6000 kms should not be having a problem with the clutch disk. But it is showing all signs of a worn clutch plate (my FE has also reduced from 14 to 7 kmpl in city, a/c usage being consistant), or is it just a mechanical adjustment problem.
All suggestions are welcomeplease:
Moderators I tried using the search page pertaining to this issue but found none.
what is the position of pedal while sticking. i guess i20 uses hydraulic clutch. Experts please correct me if i am wrong.
if its a hydraulic clutch. just open the cap and pump it couple of times. If possible drain the fluid and change. Even if your car has run only 6200kms its nearly 2 years old now.

Thank you Sir Alec for responding. Once the pedal is floored, and then released the pedal comes back to its original position but the clutch plate disengages later on(as if in slow motion) but if you try flooring it soon again I sense a play in the clutch pedal which also gets reduced in slow motion.
As the car is two years old do you mean to say the clutch disk could be worn? or are you suggesting a fluid change. And this problem surfaced soon after the last service after which the car has done around 200 kms.
Since you have mentioned about your FE also getting reduced to 7kmpl which is very low, there is problem in your clutch system. It isn't getting released and hence there is excess fuel consumption. Get it checked thoroughly and may be get it replaced if necessary(may be a faulty part).
Is there a drop in the Pick-up of your car?

Thanks Ashis, I did not experience a drop in pickup power. They upgraded the ECU during the third service ( to cover up the a/c issue that all i20 have) as a result the FE had reduced significantly but not to the extend of 7 per km as it is now.
As you said I will take it again to the service centre for a thorough check up.
BTW do you think is it advisable if I use the car in this state for a day or so.
There is a risk of damaging your clutch over prolonged use but it shouldn't be much of a problem in using for a day or two. Avoid if possible. Try to get it checked ASAP. Also do mention your FE drop issue at the A**.

No! i mean all the fluids should be changed with either oddo reading or time.
I am still not sure if i20 has hydraulic clutch. If it has just drain the clutch fluid and put a fresh one. Bleed the clutch.
If it is cable operated than change the clutch cable.
Clutch normally does not fry that early, yours being just 6200 kms.
Hi,
I am also facing same problem with my I20 Nov 2009.
Is this manufacturing defect ?
I think this is CLUTCH SLEEVE CYLINDER FAILURE ISSUE
And need to replace.
I haven't replaced it but going to visit service station next month.
Cost of this Part is approximately Rs. 2500/-
Please reply is your problem is solved?
I had faced the same issue in my Sep 09 i20 Asta(1.2).

Luckily for me, they replaced the clutch related parts under warranty, partly because the numerous complaints and the court case filed against Hyundai over the serious steering rattle troubles I was facing in the car.

Hi Sukrut,
I'm sorry for a very late reply, hopefully your problem has been resolved by now. My lifestyle has forced me to become an occassional visitor of TBHP for quite some time.
As far as my cars issue is concerned, I still have the problem, and I have realised this happens when my car remains stationery for long periods, ie over two weeks.
After long stationery period the clutch pedal does get stuck during my first run. But if I use the car occasionally the problem fades away.
The problem is with the clutch master cylinder, and I have not replaced this part yet, the HMP at delhi had quoted around 10K for this part, so I'm just living with it for now. However upon every service I get the cylinder bled and filled with fresh fluid and I make it a point to use the car atleast twice a week to keep the issue away.
Hope this info helps you.
I am sorry if this is totally out of this thread:
My i20 Sportz suddenly started acting funny.
I am unable to move the gears when the engine is running. However when the engine is shut, the gears move smoothly. I tried starting the car with gear 1 lodged and hand brakes applied - the engine wont start. I am stuck! The car needs to be reversed to take out from the parking slot and it just wont move.
tried searching for help without any luck.
I know this may have come some where - but unable to find the thread.

What is the miles on the car? Has the clutch been ever opened and worked upon or is this a sudden issue? Firstly I'd suggest not to drive the car until the service station has taken a look. They'll tow it down if necessary, so do not attempt anything else in this case.
The clutch has many parts that can lead to such symptoms such as slave cylinder, cable or some incorrect assembly (if it were ever opened). If there were symptoms like judder, poor pickup and vague shifting, then the clutch has been wearing down over time and needs inspection asap.
dark.knight - its about 21K Kms. The clutch has never been opened. This was a sudden issue. I cannot move the car one inch forget driving :). The gears shift perfectly and smoothly when engine is off. When put on - the only gear I can shift to is reverse, with a whirr sound, the car doesn't move even in reverse.
Guess your clutch isn't engaging thus not letting you slot into any gear when the engine is running.
Possible causes are that either clutch master or slave cylinder has failed, thus not decoupling the engine and gearbox. Check for fluid leakage and the level of the brake fluid. If there is a significant drop, then the leak is confirmed.
If its a petrol i20, it might be a cable failure or a broken clutch fork.
Looks like there is air in the line. Why don't you get the clutch bled once and see if things change.
