I do not know why this thread has central locking discussed as something that prevents the doors from opening. Every vehicle equipped with central locking has a "manual override." Flip/pull the unlock and then pull the handle to open the door. A central locking system with security will simply sound the alarm when you manually unlock and open the doors.

That has nothing to do with CL. Cars without CL also have child lock.

Re: What would you do if the vehicle you are in caught fire !

1) Dont panic. Quite simple on paper/computer screen, but the most difficult to implement in real life. Nevertheless, try to do this.

2) Have the toolkit/hammer with you. This can help a lot, much more than one can imagine

3) Dont waste too much time on opening doors or windows as those things are most likely NOT going to work.

4) Try to open hatch, most likely it has a mechanical link ( to the best of my knowledge, correct me if I am wrong ) or try to open the boot lid ( for sedans ). Flipping over the rear seat and coming out of rear hatch/boot space is better than attempting to break open the windows/windshields.

5) Try to hit the center of rear/front windscreen, it might help break open faster.

6) Always have one window slightly open, I do follow this, specially in monsoon where changes of water making other things inoperable is higher.
This is helpful during fires and breaking off widows is easier.

7) Act very fast and unlock the doors as soon as you notice fumes.

Re: What would you do if the vehicle you are in caught fire !

If you are in a running car which catches fire or you see smoke, pull to the side immediatele, ensure the engine is switched off, try to get out of the car using whatever means (hammer, sharp object etc). I dont think most of the doors get locked in case of any fire as a fail safe measure unless the door themselves get jammed due to whatever reason. Once out of the car, help any occupants of the car get out. After reaching safe distance from the car, call for help (fire engine, police patrol vehicle etc).
