Hey bhpians..I have been on this forum for quite a while now and i am now totally addicted to it..You ppl rock.

Well i have one question to ask, I have Esteem 97 model type-I(carburettor engine) W/o power steering.I was wondering if i can get it installed. is there anyway in which i can get it install?if yes then for how much?

Though i myself never heard anyone getting it installed but am curious to know if that is possible or not...So Keep replying.....:Cheering:

yo somebodystopme yes it can be done the electronic powersteering available on the new models can be fitted on the esteem last i heard i think its around 30k or so not sure mebbe the other guys can help you out.

Yes, even I've heard that its about 30k.... but the EPS is electronically speed senstive .... I just have a feeling that it'll require the ECU!!.
Did the Carburettor esteem ever come with a power steering?... If yes, then it still has to be available with MASS.
Even zen got the EPS once it was MPFI.

But then EPS is used by Maruti only for small cars. Even the Baleno does not come with the EPS. It uses the regular Hydraulic PS. Are you sure they use the EPS on Esteem and not the regular PS?

right, I think esteem has eps.... but could not find it anywhere documented.

all esteem vxi's (carb) after early 97 came with power steering; hydraulic ones. the latest mpfi esteems come with hydraulic power steering too. only the wagon r's, versas and the like come with EPS.

as for retrofitting an esteem with power steering- yes, it's possible, and yes, it's expensive. it will cost upwards of 35,000, as the entire steering assembly will have to be changed; it would be better if you go in for another esteem, a type II 99-00 model, vxi. the retro'ing is not worth it, unless the car holds some sentimental value, and you intend to keep it for a long time....

Well Thts a huge amount 35k+....Well I think its better to sell off this car and get a new one.Well ya when i got this one...there was esteem with Ps too....it was an Vx model and mine is Lx......thanks for your reply buddies.....

The Swift comes with EPS... and it uses the Esteem's engine (slightly modified). It is also slightly heavier (if I'm not mistaken), so you may want to find out how much that EPS unit would cost.

I think an EPS is also much easier to retrofit than a hydraulic unit.

@turbo c: well, i AM aware that the swift comes with EPS. what i meant was that both the sedans from maruti come with HPS, not EPS.

and no, retro'ing a car with EPS is not easier; EPS requires major modifications to your steering column, and you HAVE to have major rewiring done. besides, EPS fitting would also require changes in your ECU; you'll have to change your ECU, which costs 27,000 bucks, just for the unit (swift's ECU- you'll have to retro swift's ECU to mpfi esteem if you want EPS) ; and yes, you HAVE to have an mpfi car to have an ECU, so...

fitting an HPS is a much better solution, as it requires no electrical modifications. BUT, like i said, even THAT, will be expensive, so...

SS; you're on the right track; sell off your current ride, and get one with PS; it's a much better solution, the new car will have better resale value, and no hassles...

Relax dude, I wasn't trying to flame you or anything like that ! :)

I have an E2 Esteem LX and have been thinking about an EPS retrofit for sometime too...

A couple of quick questions:

What role does the ECU play in the EPS system ?
I figure that it would have something to do with the EPS setup being speed sensitive... so, if I dont wire it to the ECU, it will lose that feature, unless I can simulate the inputs it is looking for... Is there anything else it needs the ECU for?

Where exactly does the EPS actuator(s) fit ? Is it on the steering column itself or somewhere near the steering rack and pinion ?

What would a plain vanilla EPS system cost ?

i wish to fit my alto lx with a power steering. is spending abt 35k worth it?? i tried the PS wagonR and found it much more maneuverable... plz pour in ur comments..:)

NOTE FROM MODERATOR : Threads Merged.

if the alto VX (?) comes with PS tehn you can, otherwise i think you may haev a good amount of techical things to take care of.

i have no idea abt the VX.. but does maruti fits it?? or some local car garage?? if maruti is doing it and giving warranty for it then atleast my car's resale value will be upped...

I remember asking the same thing for my Indica V2 DLE. That time the price quoted to me was same as the one you have got. But, the workshop guys at Wasan said that, it is not prefered to put power steering on the Non PS car as loads of technical things come into play and it can never be as reliable as the original one. This was 2 years back

It would be wiser to go in for a PS car rather then making your car PS. It is possible but will cost quite alot in which difference you can get a PS car. Also you are not sure about the reliability.
