Friends,

A 2009 DZire(G Series) with Immobiliser started acting funny yesterday morning
  1. switch on the ignition and the Immobiliser(car+padlock symbol) yellow light on the console flashes - fuel pump starts, car cranks but does not start
  2. switch ignition off, leave for sometime, switch on again and the symbol does not flash - car starts in this case.
The car was hooked up to the scan tool at the MASS - no error code found

Those guys recoded the keys and said all will be well - not really !!

The car came home, was switched off and then restarted - problem resurfaced.

What has been tried so far(with no headway):
  1. disconnecting -ve terminal of battery for say 2 mins and reconnecting
  2. car was locked, left for a few hours and then unlocked - car started fine.
  3. shut off and restarted four/five times - no issues
  4. same issue cropped up at random
  5. once, the key was pulled out of the cylinder/steering lock , car was locked and then unlocked and then ignition switched on - the flashing disappeared and the car started ; thought that resetting the security system was the solution but no,the problem repeats
One observation -if the key is pulled out of the steering, the locks make some noise(like unlocking) ; same noise is heard even if the key is in the steering lock and is shaken a bit.

Questions:
  1. Could the immobiliser control module(steering lock) be the culprit?
  2. problem is seen with both keys so there can't be an issue in the keys ; what could be the problem?
  3. loose couplers ruled out as the car is stock ;

Let me get this straight. When you switch on your ingition 4-5 lights come on[service light PS light, battery lamp etc. Out of these, two lights go out before you crank. The service light and another one. Now is that service light [the one on the top left corner] not going out. If that is so, get your battery checked. It is a common problem with 3.5-4 year old swifts. Happened to my fathers car. Extreme situation is that it will ruin your immobiliser. Get it fixed asap.

see if this thread helps.

^^ this car +padlock symbol is on the top right corner on the console

all other lights are on and normal

Sorry to hear about your problem. I know how irritating it is because I've experienced what seems to be the same problem.
Below is the post when I first experienced it.

It was not solved even after many key learning and code reprogramming rounds (as posted in my 15k service report)
http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/test-d...ml#post2370814

the source of the problem was detected and corrected...as mentioned in the below post of my ownership report.

What I have not updated in my ownership report is, even after reassembling the antenna, I faced this problem one day when the ODO was 16250kms (as in the photo)

After that, the antenna assembly was replaced (almost when the car was 1 year old).
The problem has vanished and till date I have never faced this problem again.

OT: I'll definitely show this to certain people who, after seeing this problem were laughing at my decision to buy a fiat.
They have ended up buying a Maruti and I have only one thing to tell them.
"problems are in every car, not limited to a certain brand."

Hope this post of mine helps you in solving your problem. All the best in getting your problem solved and wish you a problem free ownership in future.

IIRC, there was a thread where a Swift had trouble starting and the error codes pointed to the Immobilizer. It was traced to a dying battery.

Have the battery checked for it's health; see if the same problem persists after swapping the battery.

^^ thanks libran

the battery is fine - else the car would not crank ; even the cranking speed is good

nevertheless,will check the voltage

Thanks Hemant

I suspect the immobiliser assembly to be the culprit

As far as Electronics go , we are at their mercy, whatever be the brand of car.

How nice it'd be if carbs were re-launched ; no such hassles.

Hi! Would you guys know what is the warning light in the picture attached here? My uncle just came to our house in his diesel swift dzire in the evening but now when he had to leave, the car refused to start. When ignition is turned on, this is the only light that is coming up and the car refuses even to crank. I could not find a mention of this light even in the owner's manual. Pls help!

That light shows a malfunction with your Speed Sensitive Power Steering. It could be a problem with the electric motor that controls the power steering. The car would probably not be starting as a safe measure since you will not be able to use the steering without the electric assist. It would be better to have this checked with your A.S.S.
