How to dispose off old car parts?

Note to Mods: Kindly merge if a similar thread already exists.

What do you do with used car parts when they are swapped with new ones ?

I got my brake disks replaced and want to dispose the old disks.

Do the junk dealers accept such metal parts ?

What is the market rate (per kg) for such items ?

Depends a bit, but I tend to keep quite a few. Sometimes you never know what you still might want to use. Some parts can be canabalized to refurbish other parts again. Obviously, I wouldnt keep a used oil filter. old disks, probably not. Might be ahndy to keep a few. You never know when a a large piece of circular metal might come in handy.

re: How to dispose off old car parts?

Scrap dealers buy steel parts at about Rs.20-25/kg. Plastics at ~Rs.10/kg. Used tyres at about Rs.20-30/tyre (in whatever condition).

I always keep it near trash cans, people who collect trash for a living see it as a gold mine and the parts disappear in just few minutes.

re: How to dispose off old car parts?

This thread came up just in time when I was wondering what to do with the below components from my Chevy Beat:

- 4 Brake Pads
- 4 Wiper Blades
- 3 Air Filters
- 4 Spark plugs

So shall I just go to my neighbourhood scrap dealer and they would weigh and pay me cash ? I guess the air filters are just waste, so won't even weigh.
The rest could fetch me a couple of hundred bucks I guess.

However, what I strongly feel is that Car Manufacturers should emphasize on some go green campaign. IIRC some companies do have it. Chevrolet doesn't.

What should be the ideal way of dealing with old parts is, when the old part is removed, the customer should be given option of disposing it off at the service center for recycling, or retain the part with himself.
Upon disposing off to the service center, he should be entitled to discounts on the new parts. Win-Win situation for car companies / service center and customer + eco friendly to mother nature.

Check with your neighborhood puncture wallah about the tyre - usually they give better price than scrap dealers and tyre shops (especially if lot of taxi's visit them).

Recently, when I changed my tyres, the tyre shop said I will get about 50 - 100 rs per tyre. I decided not to discard them and carried them in my car. Checked with a puncture guy on my way home and he quoted me 500 rs for 4 tyres.

Encouraged by this, I took the tyres to my neighborhood tyre repair guy and he quoted 1K for 4 tyres (told me 500 for 2 tyres with good thread (3 year old, 25K km done stock JK 14 inch tyres) and zero for 2 since they had worn out incorrectly due to an alignment issue - he said second hand tyre buyers dont buy tyres if they are not worn out in uniform) so I happily gave the tyres to him.

He also told me that 13 inch and 15 inch tyres have better value since most taxis use 13 or 15 inch tyres (Indica\go and Innova).

PS: What I usually do is, after checking the replaced parts, give the workshop the parts back so that they can dispose it.

I have a broken jack among many other parts. So far scrap dealers in thane at least have refused to take auto parts by weight, or even for free. Have had to throw away stuff in the garbage dump.

So far, I have always seen and left the replaced parts at the service center itself. Both at A S S and at FNG. It is a task in itself to carry them with you and dispose them off safely on your own and have found this to be convenient, at least.

At my Chevy A.S.S, it always ends up in the boot of my car.

I discover them when I reach home and put back the car cover, tool kit, etc stuff in the boot, that is when I realize that the old parts are lying there.

re: How to dispose off old car parts?

I have a punto ground clearance reducing kit. Went for GC increasing kit, was so pissed up with the resulting ride, ended up selling the car. So this kit, comprising four shocks, stabilizer bar, bushes, etc is lying in the store, dunno what to do with it.

To be honest, this happened to me couple of times with my old car during the initial phase of ownership. So, From then on, I have made a habit of looking at the boot every time before I take the car out of the service center. That way, nothing will accompany me back home

Re: How to dispose off old car parts?

I recently got my VW Polo serviced for the Aircon. The aircon is now done but i have a defective compressor and a condenser in my dicky. Is there anything apart from selling these to a scrap owner that you can think off?

Somehow the idea of giving these away to scrap owners does not seem to be something that I am comfortable with.
