Ha, good one!

Reversible engines is more a marine engine type of solution.
Don't know how they do it on modern CVT's, but it must be very similar to the old method of a very simple gearing forward/reverse.

Actually one of the bubble cars (Messerschmitt, IIRC) did use this method!

Quite right. Just found this link, stating that "if you were very brave you could go all four gears in reverse".
