Most thermal efficient/largest Disel Engine world -- 7780 bhp

Got from slashdot: The World's Most Powerful Diesel Engine

The Wartsila-Sulzer RTA96-C turbocharged two-stroke diesel engine is the world's most powerful diesel engine built to date. Each cylinder displaces a whopping 111,143 cubic inches (1,820 liters, equivalent to a cube 4 feet on a side) and produces 7,780 horsepower. The engine is about the size of a small building.

The engine is intended for use in container ships.

Marine engineers: I got a stupid question. Does it make sense building these megalithic engines or can a large ship have multiple smaller engines for inherent efficiency upgrades ?

More about techinicalities can be found at: Slashdot | The World's Most Powerful Diesel Engine

* For large ships you need huge torque for moving the ship from straight line to perpendicualr direction (that to at some safe speed). The piston diameter it self is monster(it has to stand and not break when they apply such force on engine to so such maneouvers)
* IMHO, it is not as easy as electrcity/cpu-power to club small engines power to a bigger ones

hey predator
I'd put the photo of the ship which this engine drives. Of what I remember 350-400mts long
70mts wide
10000 odd twenty foot containers
No gross tonnage. this is an engine for a container engine which is graded by the number of containers and not by the tonnage

greenhorn : yes it has twin turbochargers with aircoolers and also auxilliary blowers for the times when the turbocharger is not sufficient

I'm sorry to say its not in litres. the consumption of this engines are anyways between 100-120 tonnes. the fuel burnt is heavy fuel oil. It is one of the last remaining fractions in teh refinery after fractional distillation

Engine oil - Generally the sump of this engine has approx 14-15 thousand litres of sump oil/system oil/engine oil
