Car: Ford Classic 1.6 Duratec

80 km/h: 2700 RPM
100 km/h: 2900 RPM
120 km/h: 3100 RPM

*in 5th gear

Does not feel strained at all, with 5 people pn board, AC on full blast and luggage to boot.

For Ford Fiesta classic 2012: Post remap it feels relaxed at 120 km/h

5th gear stats:
80 kmph comes at 2000 rpm > Engine begs to be pushed for more
100 kmph comes at 2500 rpm
120 kmph comes at 3000 rpm > It cruises effortlessly but this is the point at which the noise starts to build.

I usually maintain 110 to 120 kmph on National highways for relaxed cruising.

2015 Hyundai Elite i20 Asta CRDi

100 kmph @ 2050 rpm
120 kmph @ 2500 rpm

This is in 6th gear with the ACC running. Haven't tried going much above these speeds as the engine starts sounding pretty stressed.

I usually try to maintain speeds of 100 - 110 kmph on Highways for relaxed cruising and optimal FE.

My Swift Vxi VVT :

80 kmph - 2200 RPM
100 kmph - 2750 RPM
120 kmph - 3300 RPM
140 kmph - 3900 RPM
I have not pushed it beyond 140 kmph. However , remember that there was a little more to push at the pedal while cruising at 140 kmph on 5th gear.

Having owned the Ertiga before, I find the RPM quoted for 120kmph a bit on the higher side. That said, the factors that influence a certain speed at a certain RPM on the motorway are:

1) Direction of the wind: If you're driving against the draft you'll find that your vehicle reaches the same speed at a slightly higher RPM. On the brighter side, if you're on the same direction of the wind draft, you'll find that the intended speed is achieved at a slightly lower RPM, thanks to the wind pushing you.

2) Even on a visually flat motorway, there's always a slight gradient or slope that influences the rolling resistance. Don't believe me? Try cycling down the road that appears visually flat and you'll get my point. A case in point: while driving to Bangalore, my vehicle is usually at a slighter higher RPM at 120 than it is while coming back and that's because the onward journey to Bangalore from Chennai is a mild uphill all the way through and downhill on the way back.

I cannot get into technical numbers or the engineering side of gear ratios because I have no clue. But these 2 factors have consistently influenced the RPM to speed numbers. These are observations not from one but 3 vehicles that I've driven down the same road umpteen times. This could also be the reason for varying numbers on your Ertiga to the official review as roads in Kerala are seldom flat.

Man.. I am seriously jealous of guys who are reporting 100 @ under 3000 rpm.

Palio 1.6 GTX : 2700RPM @ 100KMPH

Both at 5th gear.

In my 05 days old S Cross DDIS 320 ; still in run-in period with only 440 km on the odometer till date -

120 kmph @ 2000 rpm - 6th gear
100 kmph @ 1700 rpm - 6th gear
85 kmph @1700 rpm - 5th gear

That is effortless! How does it feel at 100 kph in 6th? Would you shift down to overtake?

95 Kmph @ 2000 rpm
105 Kmph @ 2200 rpm

Not at all, at 100 kmph, it is effortless. The peak power is available @1750 rpm!

In fact, I slowed down till 65 kmph and it was comfortable to pick it up again effortlessly!

This car masks speed so well !:) silently.

Whereas, in my Honda City, the speeds above 100 kmph are actually felt with engine sounding a raspy note after Vtec kicks in.

My XUV 500 with ACC on and 3 people on board with a lot of luggage in the sixth gear:

100 kmph in cruise control in slightly less than 2,000 rpm.

I think this has to do with the additional weight of your car. (I mean compared to a swift vxi ). Both cars ( vxi and zxi ) share the same engine. My car does 80 at 2200 RPM and 100 kph at exactly 2750 RPM.

Experienced friends may shed some more light here.

If Vxi and Zxi have the same engine and the same gearbox, they will have same engine rpm at given kmph in 5th gear.

If prithm notices higher rpm, he shall check the rpm once again (if he is reading the meter correctly). If the reading is correct prithm needs to check his clutch.

I am jealous of all owners whose cars have 6-speed gearbox rather than 5-speed that makes cruising more effortless and silent.

I hate my Swift's NVH levels when it at 100 kmph @ 2300 RPM. :Frustrati
