Mod Note: STRICTLY no discussion on illegally high speeds please.

Hello everyone, I am a bit of a sedate driver concentrating on maximum FE coupled with decent travel timings (not excessively slow type). One thing which interests me of any new car is the engine speeds /RPM at different cruising speeds. That,sort of,gives a rough idea about the category/segment of the cars it's competing with,NVH levels & comfort (rough idea as it depends on build primarily ), Fuel efficiency.

One eg from my very own garage,
Optra magnum 2.0 LT TCDI: 5 speed manual
@ 80 - 1900 RPM
@ 100 - 2100 RPM
@ 110 - 2300 RPM
@ 120 - 2500 RPM

VW Vento 1.6 TDI : 5 speed manual
Similar figures in order for the above speeds are, 2000,2250,2500,2800 RPM.

The former car is very silent and confidence inspiring while cruising at 115 kmph ,while the latter feels so at 105 kmph,after which engine drone seeps in.

Kindly share the similiar facts of your cars. There are such info already in some threads but, scattered here and there.kindly mention the RPM at highest gear.

Neo Hyundai Elantra (CRDi Automatic) - not sure about all speeds.

100kmph - 1850-1900rpm
110kpmh - 2050-2100rpm

NVH levels are quite low even with diesel engine even at higher speeds than ones mentioned above.

Well, for the cars in my garage, I have noted the following cruising speeds (Using Cruise Control) in smooth UAE tarmac

2014 Honda City CVT (1.5 iVTEC)
@80Kmph - 1500 RPM
@100Kmph - 1800 RPM
@120Kmph - 2000-2200 RPM

2015 Honda Civic 5SP AUTO (1.8 iVTEC)
@80Kmph - 1200 RPM
@100Kmph - 1500 RPM
@120Kmph - 2000 RPM

iGen i20 CRDi - 6 Speed Manual

4th Gear:

@ 60 - 1500rpm
@ 80 - 1900rpm

5th Gear:
@80 - 1800rpm
@100 - 2000rpm

6th Gear:
@ 120 - 2100 rpm

This U2, 1.4L CRDi engine is a gem. Absolutely fantastic NVH levels and very relaxed highway cruiser. Did 4000km trip during Diwali vacation and really love the way it munches miles!!!!

Great Thread!

Sx4 (Diesel)

5th Gear

80km/hr:2000 RPM
100km/hr:2500RPM
120km/hr:3000RPM

This is where i hate Linea MJD the most

All figures in 5th Gear and speedometer readings.

Linea MJD

80Km/hr - 2000RPM

100km/hr-2500RPM

120km/hr-3000RPM

Mercedes Benz W124 E220

80km/hr-1800RPM

100Km/hr- 2200RPM

120km/hr-2500RPM

This is where you down shift to 4th and rev away lol:

Renault Lodgy 1.5dCi 110PS. This is the bit I love the most and really pleased to share.

6th gear:

100 kmph @ 1900 RPM
120 kmph @ 2000 RPM

The speeds that I usually drive do (100 - 120) happens in the sweet spot where the engine purrs with absolutely no drone. The 6th cog is a real boon.

For my 2013 Honda Civic manual in US, I am getting @100kmph - 2500 RPM in 5th gear. Is it normal?

Himanshu

Storme
100 kmph 2100rpm
120 kmph 2500rpm

Toyota Innova

80Kmph - 2000rpm
100Kmph - 2700rpm
120Kmph - 3100rpm

My crusing speed always lies between 80 - 120Kmph.Goes without saying after 90Kmph the Innova likes to join-in on the conversation going on inside the cabin.:uncontrol

I have two extremes.

At 110 kph, my 2.5L Jeep is nearly at max rpm (~4,500 rpm). At 120 kph, it sounds like the pistons are going to blow their way out :D and you're hanging on for dear life, hoping that she doesn't disintegrate. The noise & vibration are that loud.

On the other hand, the 530d sees 100 kph at merely 1,250 rpm in 8th gear. 120 kph is at ~1,500 rpm!

Linea MJD, 5th Gear.

80km/hr. : 2100 RPM : 22kmpl
100km/hr. : 2600 RPM : 19kmpl
120km/hr. : 3200 RPM : 17kmpl

Quite loud thereafter.

When with A/c, FE further reduces by ~3kmpl easily.

I stick to 80-90 kmph with 100 only for overtaking (I like fast and short overtaking). AC is on all the time.

4K run Polo GT TSI
85 km/hr @ ~ 1800 rpm
100 km/hr @ ~ 2000 rpm

Average FE is around 17+ on highways. The whole "get out of the city" and "get into the city" knicks down the FE to about 16+.

60K run i10 Asta AT
85 km/hr @ ~ 2500 rpm
100 km/hr @ ~ 3000 rpm
For 6 years I am getting a FE of 13 no matter what :) The best I have ever got was 15 and that was mainly on expressway runs

100 on the 3.0 V6 accord is at somewhere around 1800-1900 rpm.

Mahindra XYLO E8 (mEagle 2.5)

I usually reach
- 80 kmph @ 2000 rpm
- 100 kmph @ 2300-2500 rpm
- 120 kmph @2800-3000 rpm

Xylo with the mEagle engine is best cruised between 80 and 100 kmph.
