Think of the advantage- you don't have to downshift every time you slow down. Makes a strong case for itself with cars having turbo lag.

Thank you guys for lightening my heart.

Yes Sajeesh/Rahul. I always checked this with full tank and at mild cruising only. I have a very delicate foot. But surprisingly I noticed one this weekend that it might have to do more with wider tires of ZXi than LXi or VXi models. Though tyre pressures are maintained at OEM standard.

a4anurag : You might relate to this more since both of us are from same location. I tested this in ORR and tested this speed ratio near Gandipet lake stretch which is the longest without bends in ORR. Though the terrain is as flat as it can get, but still I had to push it above 2800 RPM to get that 100 mark.

Regarding the NVH, I have done a double coat of sound deadening by TufKote and two coat of anti rust paint. So, compared to vanilla ZXi, mine is much quieter which is little irritating for me.

Re: Your car's engine rpm at highway cruising speeds

In S Cross DDiS200 on highway,

120 kmph @ 2000 rpm - 5th gear ( pic attached) - Note the mileage at this.
Your car's engine rpm at highway cruising speeds-20151230_050728.jpg
80 kmph @ 1800 rpm - 4th gear
40 kmph @ 1500 rpm - 3rd gear

Some discrepancy here. Needle is quite far from 120 kmph and 120kmph @2000 rpm in 5th gear seems too good to be true. Bhpian Breezydrive reports this speed in 6th gear in his S cross 320.

Read as 100 km/h at 2000rpm ( as in pic)

@100Kmph - 1800 RPM
@120Kmph - 2000-2200 RPM

@120Kmph - 2000 RPM
Seems unusually low engine speed for high revving petrol cars. But it is good if your cars delivered this performance.

My experience
Honda city GXI (2003) - Approx 3500 RPM@100 kmph
Honda city AT (2009) - 2800 RPM@100 kmph
Ford Fusion (2005) - 2900 RPM@110 kmph
Chevy Forester - 3000 RPM@120 kmph

Re: Your car's engine rpm at highway cruising speeds

Car - 2017 Honda City iVTEC MT

100kmph - Approx 3200rpm
120kmph - Approx 3600rpm
140kmph - Approx 4000rpm

Is this common for 5 speed petrol cars? What about long term reliability, due to the high revving engine?

Worry less about this, honestly!

Just because they are 5 speed Petrols, it doesn't mean these machines are badly engineered to give up prematurely due to the mere fact the revs are higher than their diesel counterparts.

Take the case for a simple MPFI engine of my puny car with a displacement of 1100cc that is inching towards the 250,000 Km mark now. At least till 220,000 km till I picked another car, it was very regularly driven only on highways and 100 KMPH would easily mean 3500 RPM. This, was also not known for refinement or NVH levels but surely one of the most frugal petrol engines even today.

Bottom line : Worry less

Re: Your car's engine rpm at highway cruising speeds

Car: WagonR 1.0
ODO: 72xxx kms

Speedo:
90 kmph@2900 rpm
100 kmph@3100 rpm
110 kmph@3500 rpm
120 kmph@3900 rpm

I have rarely gone beyond 120 and hence don't remember the engine behavior at higher speeds.

Toyota Corolla Altis -

100 kph at 2750 RPM in 5th gear. 120 kph is a shade under 3000 RPM.

The 5th is way too short for such a powerful engine.
