My A-star moves, but you can feel the difference. Its like someone pulling you the other way. Have experienced the same on my wife's Eon and my friend's Brio.

As for the topic in hand, do whatever suits you, I don't think it makes a difference. I use the handbrake with the assuring kkkrrrrrk noise. They work fine after 5 years.
