Deciphering your PUC Certificate :-

A mechanic once told me that anyone can judge the engine quality/state of a car by carefully examining the PUC Certificate. Is that true to some extent ?

He told me that by observing the CO Regulation (given in % terms) and the Actual Reading (in terms of % Volume), we can get a clear picture of the health state of a car.

But I've some doubts regarding that...
  • Will there be a difference in the CO percentage between Diesel & Petrol vehicles ?
  • The old vehicles may be creating more pollution, so how can we compare a Bharat II & a Bharat III vehicle ?

The CO/km figure depends a lot on the engine capacity and bhp figure. Hence the CO regulation is also different for different cc classes.

Your questions are well answered at the SIAM website. Here is the link :

Certainly the vehicles which conformed to previous standards had greater CO and NOx emissions.
The petrol engine has greater CO emission compared to diesel one whereas the diesel has greater NOx emission.
