while surfing fiat grande punto's website, i read that the car had a 'follow-me-home' headlights. what is that??

In simple terms, it is a feature which allows you to keep ur path lit with the low beams of ur car's s headlightwhen u get home (or anyplace else) in the dark. u switch off the lights get out, lock the car and the feature is activated. It allows and enables you to walk to your door and get in the confines of your home by keeping the area lit. In this way it somewhat ensures safety (to make sure u dont fall, trip or dash against something and also lets u know of any dangers in the path including hidden strangers. In most cars one can set a timing for the light to be on.
In india it's available in the honda accord as well as few skoda models.
its available on the scorpio too. very useful feature.
...in addition to what the others have written above - a lot of garages in western countries are either too small or used as storage space - this leaves the driveway as the only place left to park your car.
in such cases Follow Home lights are useful when one doesn't have any other sort of lighting on the driveway.
I have my own "Follow me home/show the pathway" system since a long time - even before they started giving it on cars. The system has 4 legs and massive personality. Also called German Shepherd. My lovable own.
Very nice feature and Merc also have.

On a more serious note I recently realized that the Tatas have a low cost version (probably) of this in the Indicas (probably some other hatches also have this?!?). When you close the doors there is a delayed switch off of the cabin lights... This illuminates the place around the car for sometime. Anyhow compared to most other hatches the Indica cabin light is much bigger and stronger in intensity. A very handy thing. It helped me the other day when I had to visit a shop after 8.30 in the evening. The place was all dark and I had to get on a sidewalk and then walk upto the door. The illumination from the cabin lights actually helped.

the skoda laura has it.quite pointless imo.
SWIFT has the delayed switch-off for the cabin light. But having it for the headlights will be a even more nice to have feature. I wish there should be some aftermarket kits available.
The Ford Fusion also has this function -- Slow dimming of cabin lights, as well as the slow dimming of headlamps.
Ford Fusion does not have slow dimming of headlamps, its only for cabin lights.
Uh yes, The Ford Fusion has delayed switch off for headlamps. The headlamps stay on in dim mode for a few secs after the car is locked, and then switch off by themselves. Thanks for the correction, netarchie :)
