CVT issue - Noise when accelerating

Hi Members of team bhp. I own a Toyota Corolla Altis VL AT (CVT). Recently the transmission is making noise when the car accelerates. I have regularly got my car serviced at the toyota dealership. The Car only has 40k kilometres. The car is used sparingly to only travel around the suburb. I have always cooperated with the dealership. All suggested replacements are performed on my vehicle. Please help or give advice for this situation.

Hi, I’m not much of an expert on CVT but have you only serviced the car at 1 dealer? If so, I’d recommend giving the car to another dealer to see if they can spot the problem. I did a cursory google search to see what this could be (May not be accurate!) and apparently it might be that an internal bearing is failing or something. Might possibly have something to do with the belt of the CVT.

Anyway, my recommendation is give the vehicle to another dealer and see if they spot the problem. Tell them what’s already been done on the car so that they don’t waste time.

re: CVT issue - Noise when accelerating

May not be a transmission issue at all. Have the silencer checked, some of the baffles inside may be broken, which creates a sound when you accelerate. Because the sound is heard only when you accelerate, it may seem like the transmission is at fault.
Good luck, and let us know what the actual diagnosis and fix is.

Agreed. Might be bearing related, or something as small as the fluid. CVTs are extremely sensitive to the fluid & it's super important. Luckily, you're with Toyota and their service is top class. Send it to them tomorrow. If noise is too high, get a flatbed to avoid any further damage .

I own a Yaris CVT and keen to know what diagnosis Toyota dealers come out with. Grinding noise from CVT with just 40k on odometer is worrying. As suggested, you might try with another dealer in your city. Please keep us posted.

- How old is your car? Is it still under warranty?
- Have you shown this particular issue at the Service Center? If yes, what did they have to say about it?

Just how old is the car for these 40k kilometers to have run? The ATF fluid for your transmission needs changing every few years. Most cars that's the 4 year mark. So check if your car is due for that and drain and refill ATF fluid before trying anything else. ATF fluid is expensive but any other repair related to an AT gearbox will be even more expensive so rule that out first.

It has gone for a fluid change

Did the fluid change fix the issue? Any other updates?

It could be a rotten heat shield down there in the exhaust assembly. My erstwhile Compact SUV with a CVT in the US used to make a shrill metallic noise when accelerating. Turned out that the road-salt used on those icy roads had rotted the heat shield and it would vibrate really badly when the A pedal was pressed. In your case, living in Mumbai, maybe rust has gotten to the metal in your car. Do get the car's underbody checked.

(The CVT is just coincidental in this diagnosis, in hindsight!)

Hi,

Does the noise occur also at idle or parked state?

If yes, then look for loose fitting parts, engine shield, fender liners etc.

If it occurs only whilst being in motion, then jack up the car and spin all the wheels one by one, with the engine off. If you hear a grinding noise then it most likely is the wheel bearing.

If it doesn't occur then check the driveshafts, silencer bushes etc.

Hope it gets resolved soon!

Re: CVT issue - Noise when accelerating

Did you get the CVT belt checked? If the car was not used regularly, belts can get harder.

Re: CVT issue - Noise when accelerating

I'm following up this thread as we also own an Altis CVT.
Please try out the suggestions given by others. I haven't heard anything like this before. I used to go through lot of forums before I got Corolla AT. Please check forums like Toyotanation. There are some forums in Thailand and Singapore.
Hopefully you can get it resolved fully at the earliest.
