I am in the process of upgrading my Lancer' s engine performance alongwith body modifications & generally giving a new lease of life to my 2000 model Lancer GLXi. The engine is being completely overhauled & ported & polished. In addition to the usual headers, muffler/s, air intake, airfilter upgrade, throttle body enhancement. I wanted to know if there is any benefit in performance if I were to use twin tail pipes instead of the single 3" muffler ? Is it adviseable to go with 4x2x1 or 4x2x2  Please help. Any helpful suggestions are welcome.
Cheers
Me too wants to know. viper?
Hi Guys,
There is no real advantage other than the show factor, infact the sound sometimes may get louder. Always better to go in for 4x2x1 if its bottom end and mid range power you want else go for 4x1 for high mid to top end power. 4x2x2 is an absolute NO unless you have a V6.

HEy viper,..how bout something in the link i posted.i muffler and two pipes out of it..??
Hi viper
Thanks very much for the prompt reply, the exhaust was always a grey area. Glad I checked.

Which option is best for a relatively quiter exhaust for normal city driving ? I don't mind a mild rumble but definately don't want the exhasut screaming LOOK I AM HERE !!!lol:

Hi,
The 4x2x1 is best for a quiet exhaust. 4x1 will be too loud.
@Binz - Have never tried it out so cannot comment. In theory it looks like you will be losing power.

Hey viper,
Dont mind if its a stupid question but.. A 4x2x2 exhaust setup wil be better in terms of free flow of exhaust right..therfore improvement in prefomance..theoritically tht is......
but then you will reduce your backpressure and hence the torque characteristics will change
are there 2 mufflers or one in a two pipe set up?
I think fitting a 4x2x2 in a car which has OEM exhaust fitting for 4x2x1 would be problem at least on the the exhaust pipes out of the two would be fitted a little lower than the existing OEM fitting and hence the chances of hitting it on speed bumps is more.. Shouldnt make much of difference in performace than the 4x2x1 with nicely tuned headers....
Curiosity gets me........Is the sound of the exhaust going to be much louder in case of a Turbo Install. I currently have a 4x2x1 setup.

Your exhaust note will be more silent with a TC.
What is the total pie dia (double or single).
If you increase the pipe dia, you will get horsepower gainst esp at high rpms
If you increase the velocity(less pipe dia) low end torque gain is there.
Most cheap exhausts are designed for horsepower gains and making one for torque gains is a little more difficult.
If you use too wide an exhaust, it will rob you of low end torque(something to do with backpressure).
So in the end dual exiting or single exiting exhaust does not matter, all that matters is the exhaust velocity.
If gas flow area of single and dual are same, you will have same characteristics. Dual/single no difference if velocity is same.
