Ground Clearance

Getz GLS has tyre specs as 175/70R13 and GLX (ABS+ ALLOYs) has 175/65R14. Does this mean that GLX has higher ground clearance of 0.5 inch?

70 as in 175/70 R13 is the section height of the tyre so when you choose 65 as in 175/65 R14, its lower profile which means the ground clearance reduces.

I just used logic to respond, i could be wrong.

Comparison of running radius of tyres

1. 175/70-13

radius of rim = 6.5x 25.4 = 165.1mm
sidewall of tyre = 0.70x 175 = 122.5mm

Running radius = radius of rim + sidewall hieght = 165.1 + 122.5 = 287.6

2. 175/65-14

radius of rim = 7x 25.4 = 177.8mm
sidewall of tyre = 0.65x175 =113.75mm

Running radius = radius of rim + sidewall hieght = 177.8 + 113.75 = 291.55


Difference in running radius of both tyres is the difference in ground clearance

175/65-14 will provide u with extra 4mm ground clearance

175 - section width of the tyre
70 - profile of the tyre(%age)
13 - rim size

sidewall of the tyre = (70/100) x 175 =122.5mm

kpzen, you're absolutely right.

mobike008, this is how it's computed!



So, the difference is 3.95 mm, which is IMHO, insignificant.
10,000 km of tire wear will shave off 2-3 mm of tread anyway!

Can we increase the ground clearence of a car ? if yes how ? car in question is aveo , like to have the ground clearance which sx4 enjoys .

Why do u want to increase the GC of Aveo which has good enough GC for our Indian roads??

I am sorry, but i still didnt get it.

175 is the section width.
70% is the profile,
13 is the rim radius.

so then
"radius of rim = 6.5x 25.4 = 165.1mm"
is what radius and how is this getting calculated?

Appreciate explaining it a little more

Not sure if i understand your doubt exactly, but...

6.5 (is half of 13", which is the rim diameter)
25.4 (is the multiplication to convert inches to mm)

the resultant answer (165.1mm) is the radius of only the wheel (without the tyre added to it)
