IIT Delhi students making formula car for Formula SAE

A group of budding engineers from IIT Delhi committed to experiencing high end automotive racing are building a car to take part in the Formula SAE competition is annually held in 8 places around the globe. Went to my old college today and found out what my juniors are upto. Most of the students are in 2nd year of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Delhi.
Formula SAE is about the most elite competition for mechanical engineering at the college level. We are a first time team and the only Indian participation at Formula SAE West. The participating teams are required to conceive, design, fabricate, and compete with small formula-style racing cars and function like a small firm. The restrictions on the car frame and engine are limited so that the knowledge, creativity, and imagination of the students is challenged. 80 colleges and universities from around the world participate in this competition. The 4-day adrenaline pumping mega event includes various dynamic and static competitions from cost reports to acceleration runs.
I went to my old college to meet couple of my friends and wanted to check their progress. Here are a few pics I took.
The engine used by them is a used Yamaha YZF-R6 engine which they imported. They got some freebies from Hindalco ( a set of 4 Aura rims ). The body work is being carried over by Maruti. Its a pleasure to see these guys working in the mechanical department workshop on lathe machine and trying to tune up the engine. They will be representing SAE India team at California Speedway Fontana, California USAfrom 13th to 16th June 2007. you can visit this link for more information.

Very interesting intake manifold indeed

The tubing on the chassis looks fairly thin too...i wonder what wall thickness it is...

just found out that DCE and IITD teams are competing at different places. FSAE is held at 8 different locations. DCE team goes to UK usually while IITD team is going to California. Would have been great if both the teams could have helped each other

FSAE IIT Madras

Hello guys

Happy to see quite a few FSAE threads here.
IITM is also trying for FSAE-J this year(the one held in Japan).
Hope to get some useful inputs from here.

As I already read from other threads, getting spons and components is really the main problem for us too :(

There was a fantastic build based on the FISSME chassis by students of chennai, last year.
Unfortunately, the vehicle couldn't be exported due to some customs issues.

The thing is that Indian FSAE teams are literally underdogs.
The competition from european countries like Germany gives the team a complex as soon as they see the design and hear about their budgets.
Indian teams are sadly "also rans".
I dream about that one day when we smash the competition. Hope I live to see that day!
Go INDIA GO!
