Re: Can Bus!!!

Bumping up a very old thread. Does anyone know what is the impact of fitting a Canbus enabled LED Bulb in a non CanBus system? Does it have any negative effect?

No. The CAN-Bus compatible bulbs are made in such a way that they do not cause any errors in cars which can detect blown bulbs. For a non Canbus vehicle, it will not make any difference whether or not you use Canbus compatible bulbs.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. They achieve this by adding resistors to make the power consumption equal to the stock bulbs.

It depends on how the LED is designed. The most simplest design would have a resistor in parallel to the LED where in case of LED failure, voltage across the resistor would help in detecting if LED has gone bad. Normally this wouldn't be a problem if LED is inserted in a can-bus enabled vehicle but in case of non can-bus vehicle there is a chance that this resistor would create heat which in turn will result in reliability problems for the LED and impact its operating life.

Below video explains this phenomenon and concludes that its better to avoid inserting can-bus enabled LEDs in non canbus sockets if its going to be continuous operation of lights (as in case of night driving).

I would suggest that you play it safe and avoid this situation.
